DOH! i just created what i thought was a superb dvd of a tv series, checked it over and burned it, but to my horror i have just noticed a spelling error in one of the menu buttons, is there any way of correcting such an error without recreating the whole disc, ie a menu changer or similar,

Open up your authoring files, and re-author. You DID save your source, right? Or at least keep it long enough to verify output?

If you still have it saved on your harddrive it shouldn't be to hard to pick at it and repair what is needed. It all depends on you and your software. I got all cocky before and burned the wrong files before (with an audience) and had to start over from scratchIS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT? -
If you didn't save the files on your PC just use the files from the DVD that you burned!

So can i alter the spelling in the menu without having to recapture all the stills i have used etc etc if so which program does it

The text is embedded into the video image. You have no choice but to re-author the DVD. You can't expect to make one simple fix to repair the spelling mistake.
