  1. Hey, I just need to make sure I have everything to backup a dvd
-Sony DRU 710A DVD Burner http://www.firewire-1394.com/sony-dru710a.htm

    -DVD-R's
-Approx. 60 GB free hard drive
    -DVD Shrink
    -Nero
    -DVD Decrypter

Should this work for backing up DVD's?

Also, my friend tried to backup a dvd with his burner, but apparently the compressed DVD was still too big. Also, this DVD that he is trying to backup is a concert, and he does not want to cut out much if any.

Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

You've got enough, but you might want to add a DVD Reader to make things go a little faster.

How did he compress it? Personally I've never a seen a DVD that DVDShrink won't compress enough to fit on one disk.

Shrink compresses video, but leaves the audio alone. It is possble, but unlikely, that a concert video has such a big audio file that the video can not be compressed enough to fit the DVD. But what is more likely is that you just have the settings wrong in Shrink. If yo have decrypter, you don't have to have Nero.

A DVD-ROM will certainly hep you out from a time perspective, not to mention saving a bit of wear and tear on your burner.

I have. Probably only two or three times out of the 200 DVDs I've Deep Analysed. It's either been music or episodes. I should quantify this by saying that it's only been with the version of DVDShrink where a 50% compression limit was introduced (V3.0 b5, I think ?). Back in 2.3, you can set the compression to whatever you want. Say goodbye to the quality though.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. Thanks for all the great tips.

I am new to this computer stuff and would like to know more about a dvd-rom. Is it separate from the DVD burner? My DVD burner is internal, and would the dvd-rom be able to burn music cd's also? Any links or decent/good dvd-roms that would fit my needs? I still need to backup or create my own music cds, along with dvds. Will I have two disc drives running at once? Does the DVD still have to save to the harddrive, or can it just directly copy to another cd? Also, does anyone know if the DRU-710A can burn cd-rw's or cd-rs? In other words, if I get a DVD-ROM to go along with the DRU-710A, will i be able to burn dvds and cds?

If anyone has AIM or AOL, it'd be greatly appreciated if I could ask some questions.. my aim is Chowyo123.

A DVD burner will read and write. A DVD ROM will only read. It is a separate drive from the DVD burner.

A DVD ROM will read DVDs and CDs (music or data). A DVD ROM will not burn anything- but you can buy a DVD ROM which is combined with a CD burner. That will read DVDs or CDs but only burn CDs.

Your DVD burner will also burn CDs, so you don't really need a separate CD burner.

With a DVD ROM and a DVD burner you can copy directly from one CD/DVD to another CD/DVD (unless other steps such as decryption or compressing are needed).

If you want a DVD ROM you can get a Liteon for under $30 at Newegg:

    http://www.newegg.com/

The Liteon 167 is $27.00 including shipping http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-131-116&depa=0

Most people are happy with LiteOn DVD ROMs, and newegg gets good marks around here.

  8. Thanks for all the great tips, i will definately be getting a dvd-rom to go w/ my burner.

So the best way to backup DVDs is by saving it to the harddrive, since most need to be compressed and decrypted?

    Hello,

I usually just use dvdshrink to rip and backup at the sametime. Works just fine

  10. I have seen concert and music video DVD's with only LPCM soundtrack. On one Sonic Youth DVD the audio track alone is almost 3GB. That doesn't leave much room for the video. What I had to do was demux the streams, transcode the LPCM audio to AC-3, then reauthor the DVD with DVD-Lab Pro.

There is a guide for something similar to this (which I didn't follow):

How to replace LPCM by AC3 before shrinking a DVD

  11. Ok, I'm going to get a dvd-rom drive for christmas.
Thats means I have a DVD burner, and a dvd-rom drive.
How will this work? Will i put the dvd to be burned in my dvd-rom drive, rip it to my hard drive, and then use the dvd burner to put in on a blank dvd?

I was looking at this dvd-rom drive at circuit city: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Lite-On-Internal-DVD-ROM-Drive--SOHD-167T-/sem/rpsm/oid...oductDetail.do
    -Lite-On Internal DVD-ROM Drive
    -16x DVD-ROM read
    -Read any format CD/DVD

    Yep, that's it.

You use the DVD-ROM to rip to your hard drive because it will rip quicker to your hard drive than your burner can. Feed these files into DVDShrink, then from within DVDShrink you can tell it to use DVDDEcrypter or Nero to burn its output automatically.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    ummm ...... what ?

Your DVD burner is a box, about 5 inches by 7 inches. It also has the capacity to read DVDs, just like a DVD-ROM. However a DVD-ROM is another 5 inch by inch box by itself. We are talking about getting another box when we say get a DVD-ROM. If you already have another box, then you don't need another DVD-ROM.
    If in doubt, Google it.

If you have a DVD burner (writer) it will read and write and you don't "need" another drive other than a harddrive. The thing is that most people treat their DVD writers with great care, and in an effort to preserve them, they only write with them. And with two seperate drives (one ROM and one a writer) you can copy "on the fly". Another advantage to having a newer ROM drive is that it will likley read faster than your writer will and thus you save time getting info to your harddrive and save your writer.
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?

  16. thx for the help zapper. I purchased my dvd-rom drive tonight, and will try it out tomorrow. jimmalenko, when I said my dvd burner has a dvd-rom built in, i meant that my dvd burner has a read speed for a dvd-rom of up to 16x. So both my separate dvd-rom and my dvd burner can read a dvd of up to 16x. Will there be any difference in ripping speed if both my dvd-rom and dvd burner can read up to 16x?

  17. Hi-

Will there be any difference in ripping speed if both my dvd-rom and dvd burner can read up to 16x?

Probably. As said before, don't shorten the lifespan of your burner by also using it to decrypt to the hard drive. Most DVD burners are slower than DVD-ROMs at decrypting, no matter what the specs say. Try them both out on the same DVD, and compare the ripping speeds and times.

  18. Ok, thank you very much. I will try both the dvd-rom and burner tonight and compare the speeds.
