Tattoos - Not the midget from Fantasy Island

Any of you have tattoos? After years of deliberation, I've finally decided on what I want. I want to get a snake wrapped around my left arm from the shoulder to the wrist, with the head on the back of my hand. BUT, I'll probably go for something smaller, to start with. I'm thinking about an eagle or something else patriotic on the right side, but I'm still undecided.

Aside from anything else, if I got one I'd have to stop giving blood for a couple of years. That's six units of O- they'd miss.

Me too. Not only that, no matter what you think, they don't look good - especially when you are 50+ you just end up looking like a moron.

My buddy got one just like that except the head was just above his bicep, he is now known as snake , probably until the day he dies. At least in our circle of friends.

not necessarily - if you get it slapped on by some hack, yes it will probably age poorly (although all tattoos will age as well or poorly as the rest of your body!).

but most 50-year old tattoos that you see on the street were slapped on quickly on someone who was waiting to be shipped out overseas. they were applied in a hurry, and without much attention to craft - most are applied too deeply, and as the lower skin layers shift, the ink spreads and smears the image.

by contrast, one properly applied, and properly cared for, should look fine in 50 years - I've seen pics of little japanese guys with 60+ year old tattoos that look stunning.

as for me, I've got 7 tattoos, and 10-guage piercings in each ear. (need to go get some more work done - it's been 6 years since my last tattoo!)

although personally, I won't get anything that I can't cover with a long-sleeve shirt - I can't see getting the backs of my hands or my neck done unless I've used up all the rest of the available space!

Don't forget, they are addictive. If you get one, it will get lonely and insist on getting another, and another.

Make sure the tattoo is something that will make sense to you later in life. I am 50 and have two tattoos that are not embarrassing. I don't think I look like a moron and I teach at a unoversity. Of course, you should put them where they can be covered if necessary for job interviews or some such formal occasion. I usaually get a tattoo to commorate significant events in my life and try to make the tattoo relevant to the event. Of course, that is a personal decision..

I don't have any personaly. My brother-in-law is a big Star Trek fan and has the Enterprise from the original series flying towards a large moon across his entire back. Makes me wonder what Yoda has...any Star Wars related tatoos Yoda?

a couple of further tips:

- have the design you want, at the size you want. don't go in and expect to find the perfect design on the wall.

- the size you think is big enough? upsize it by at least 25%.

- have enough cash on you that no matter what it costs, cost is not an issue.

- NEVER let money come between you and the tattoo you want, or cause you to settle for less, just to get new ink. If the tattoo you want is going to cost $300, save up $300 (or better yet, $400). Don't go and get a $100 version of a $300 piece.

- remember that removal is expensive and painful, while preparation and contemplation are free and painless. Plan ahead, and make sure this is something you want to wear for the rest of your life.

The great thing about tattoos is most women are proud of them and will show you them regardless of location. I've seen some interesting tattoos in some interesting places.

I think tatoos are really ugly. I also think that the current proliferation of tatoos is a symptom of our overpopulation problem. My reason being that these people think that by getting a tatoo, they they are somehow unique.

My favorite of all of these "unique" individuals are the ones who get the non-inspirational, inspirational messages tattooed on them (inspirational only to those with moron mentality). Statements like "Lead, Follow, or Get of the Way"... or "Death Before Dishonor", or "From My Cold Dead Hands"....

An old female friend of mine decided years ago to get a tatoo of a black widow spider on one of her butt cheeks. There was a co-worker of hers that kept bugging her to show him the tatoo... She asked if I had a scanner, which I did - so I scanned her tatoo so that she might show it to him. I still laugh at the thought of running a hand scanner across her ass to get the scan.

Also - she was a little concerned about other people seeing the scan so I told her she had nothing to worry about... Over the next week our entire circle of friends had nice black widow wallpapers...

I don't have any tattoos but I do have about a half dozen piercings along my guiche.
