This just occurred to me. We all know +r's can have their booktype changed. This seems to solve compatibility problems with some players. -r's can't be bitset because the booktype area is already imprinted on the disc. -r's apparently have better compatibility even without bitsetting. Wouln't it be possible to create uber-compatible media by having DVD-R's manufactured with a ROM book type? I'm not sure if burners actually use the booktype to determine if a disc is recordable or not, but I can see how this might cause problems with some burners, but it should be somthing fixable with a firmware upgrade. My burner can tell the difference between a +R bitset to ROM and an actual DVD-ROM. I favor +R's myself so this doesn't really make a difference to me, but any ideas why they don't manufacture specially labeled (and higher priced:P) DVD-R's already bitset?
And if this idea takes off, I'll always have this post to prove I thought of it first![]()

If your goal is to accomplish the same thing bitsetting a +R disc to -ROM, the disc would just report as a DVD-ROM, and would be treated no different than a regular DVD-ROM or a +R bitset to a DVD-ROM.
Some driver (computer or standalone) check to see what kind of disc is inserted, and have a set of instructions to follow for specific types. Think of a simple set of IF statements:
Some drives just stop dead if they don't recognize a disc type.Code:If DVD-R do .... IF DVD+R do .... IF DVD-ROM do ....
A +R/RW/DL bitset to DVD-ROM will basically show up to the player as:Code:Example, using the above, a +RW disc is inserted. The goes through its checks, and does not find a match. The drive does not know what to do, since there is no IF DVD+RW do ....
The above is my understanding of what bitsetting does. I hope that makes some sense.Code:IF DVD-R does nothing, disc is set at DVD-ROM IF DVD+R does nothing, disc is set at DVD-ROM IF DVD-ROM continues to read the disc as a pressed dvd-rom

I have an NEC 3500a and I'd like to set the booktype to DVD-ROM if possible. Just don't know how to do it.

Only "+" formats can be bookset, because the "-" formats do not need such things. They are officially supported by the DVD Forum, and do not need to "trick" the player.Originally Posted by Captain315Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)
