  1. Hello to all here and hopefully Lordsmurf will read this thread and give me some info. I am currently taking my vhs tapes and puting them on dvd. Here ishow my setup is its VCR- Datavideo TBC 1000- Sima color corrector- dvd recorder. Here is my problem, when I played a first generation tape the other day on my vcr the video wanted to do the flagging thing towards the top of the screen to where it looks like its tearing or stretching and the TBC 1000 always corrects things like this but it was actually the TBC 1000 that was causing this problem so I tried recording without it and it went away cause the Panasonic I have has a built in Time Base Corrector and it fixed the problem but the Datavideo one made it like that and was wondering why would the Datavideo Time Base Corrector do this when it was a way better TBC then what is built in the Panasoinc? I have used it and tested it between two other vcr's and the one vcr wich when it plays any tape it has a flagging problem when it went through the TBC 1000 it was fixed and recorded fine on the other vcr with no problems and would not know why this would happen with a first generation tape? So I hooke it up again like above and it does it all the time with the one tape and it does not do that on the Panasonic if I do not use the TBC1000. Can anyone shed some light on the subject and if they would reccomend any help on what I should do and if I should just quit using it. Thanks and hope to hear from Lordsmurd since he knows a lot about them and more then I do.

The error in the tape were so compounded that replacing the sync info was bad. This can happen. This can happen when using full-frame TBC on really, really bad tapes.

The "TBC" inside a DVD recorder (a "line" TBC) may as well not exist, so it was simply like not having a TBC.

You may also try to switch between s-video and composite. The VCR may also be throwing out the bad signal, it may not be the tape at all. So try another VCR.

The recorded DVD, when you play it back does that also show the "flagging" ?
When I record from VHS via TBC 1000 to DVD recorder Panasonic, I use a small, cheap Deawoo TV as monitor; however when I playback the DVD on my Panasonic TV, pictures are perfect, no flagging at all - so one day I'll have to buy a better quality TV monitor

If you play back your VCR - via the TBC 1000 - try once to attach the latter directly to your TV and check what happens

  4. Hello to all who replied, to answer your question and to give some more info it was on a tape that I made straight from tv and the tape was not a dubbed one so it was a first generation tape. So I don't know why the Datavideo TBC would not fix the problem but my Panasonic would with its line TBC and the Panasonic takes out the whole flagging thing. I also tried a different vcr and it does not do it with the TBC 1000 so I think it has something to do with the vcr itself but it does not have this problem with other tapes playing it though. O well I guess if the Datavideo does not work for me I just can un hook it for the time being and use it when a tape does not give me any trouble cause I do like to use it for keeping the best video quality possible while helping with jitter etc. Also once the source video has gone through the Datavideo TBC it records whatever it spits out on my Panasonic since the Datavideo TBC changes the signal from a analog to digital back to analog signal so the Panasonic can not time base correct this I guess. O well I guess I will have to deal with it but I still would not want to do without the Datavideo TBC since it does work 99 percent of the time and really does help on really bad tapes. Well thanks you guys for the input I appreciate it

I've done hundreds of commercial tapes with my TBC-1000 and occasionally ...rarely ...I have gotten one that has the tearing in the top portion like you describe. Removing the TBC-1000 and taking my chances without it solved it. So I don't think the Panny "fixed" anything. I think removing the TBC-1000 is what did it.

Occasionally tapes play better without correction. Some tapes play better in less finicky machines. IMO the tapes with edge damage can create this kind of problem.

  7. Hello thanks for the help, I tried it without the TBC 1000 and it fixed the problem so the Panasonic did in fact fix it but it was not perfect I guess it was that bad so I am using another vcr that won't give me that problem but I will still use it most of the time just not on this tape cause the Datavideo helps a lot in making dvd's. Thanks everyone for all you help I appreciate it
