What does one's sound chip have to do with capturing video?

Please excuse my ignorance, just trying to understand why the signal must passs through the soundchip before it is captured into our software. It seems like some extra little thing...

If you consider audio "an extra little thing", then I guess so. Most of us like to have audio with the video.
