Is there some kind of windows setting to check on the status/enable SMART? I couldn't find the setting to enable SMART from the BIOS menu.

    Thanks.

  2. It doesn't seem so - I ran a quick search on Google (30 seconds). How about a BIOS update? What board do you use?

I wonder if it is enabled by default, and they've just hiddent the option.

Yeah, I did a google search, too. I didn't find any helpful info, so I gave up.

My board is an Asus A7M266-D. I'm running the BIOS that came was installed when I purchased the board. I gave my floppy drive to my mom, so I didn't ever update the BIOS.

It's not that big of a deal, but I would enable it if I knew how. My 120Gig is making funny noises, but it's been making them for about a year. I also ran a disk check a couple months ago and nothing was corrupted.

Strangely enough, my IBM 120Gb drive makes funny noises too and has been doing for ages. It works perfectly and tests fine, it just makes the odd clunking sound every so often (the motor in it also whistles, sounds like a jet engine at times!). I keep thinking I'll replace it but as it ain't (currently) broke, why fix it!

  5. Just make sure all your critical files are backed up.

Richard_G - That's exactly what my drive is doing. It's also an IBM 120Gig. I'm more curious about the noise than I am worried that it'll break.

Well, I keep all my pr0n on my other physical drive, so that's taken care of.

It should be somewhere in the BIOS, if your mobo supports it.
    If in doubt, Google it.

jimmalenko - Do you know what setting it should be under? I went through everything, but if you can point me in the right direction, I can look more attentively. I may have overlooked it. I've been in the BIOS enough times, but sometimes the most obvious things are overlooked. Like when you go nuts looking for your keys and they were on the kitchen table the whole time.

Just had a look on both my two rigs. On the first, I couldn't find it anywhere. On the second, it was under Advanced Setup, and there was an entry called S.M.A.R.T. for Hard Disks, which I could toggle between Enabled and Disabled.
    If in doubt, Google it.
