I think Plextor has as much admitted it by not releasing it anywhere but BestBuy in the USA and continually delaying the roll out everywhere else. When was the last time you saw a rebate on a burner that wasn't even out 2 weeks like BestBuy did ? Then all the European outfitters keep delaying the release date.
I can't vouch for any problems because i don't own one but reading the guys at CdFreaks comments, it sounds like it could even be a hardware problem and not a firmware problem causing the trouble and that isn't good news if you just spent 139 dollars for a burner..

If it were me, i'd get a Pioneer 108,BenQ 1620, or NEC 3500 (which i have).

No use playing Guinea pig on the 716 until they get it all squared away.

Every manufacturer has problems with dvd burners. Unfortunately there does seem to be a hardware problem with the 716A drive. I'll be purchasing one when Plextor gets the bugs out. The 716A is even being released to online stores like Newegg.com yet. Dunno why Best Buy is being the guinea pig for that drive.

  5. Is there a need to use that PlexTools that came with the drive?

  6. So far, the only issues I've had with this burner is when I've fed it cheap Media like Memorex +R 8x and CompUSA's store brand blanks. I use Nero just like always with great results. I've also updated the firmware. Hope that helps

  7. I bought one and returned it the next week. It simply wouldn't recognize a single disc, burnt, blank, pressed, cd, or dvd. Stay away. Get the Pioneer A09 or the new NEC 3520 when they come out. It is rediculous that Plextor doesn't have a decent 16x drive to market yet. Others have been out for almost 6 months. Remember the days when Plextor used to be a leader?

I agree I've had no issues with my 708A drive.

  10. Our 708A, 712A and 712SA are working just fine. I hope they get the bugs taken care of because I've been holding out just to get a 716 but in SATA.

  11. Bought mine last week and already had to take it back. It was fine until about 6 days later when it would not recognize dvd+r. All other formats of disc would work but not dvd+r. The drive would go into led spasms trying to read the media.

I'd wait until Plextor gets all the bugs out on the 716A drive. Only Best Buy is selling them right now. Online stores like Newegg aren't even selling it yet.

  13. I had a 708a and loved it. I only sold it to buy my Pioneer A08. Plextor used to have the fasted CD burners to market and were the first with the 708a 8x DVD burner to market. Their quality was unheard of. The 716a is just taking way too long. But if you consider Plextor a leader still when they can't get a 16x drive to market, then good for you. Other companies have had 16x drives out for months.

  14. I haven't even opened my box yet (from BB), the results from others have been that bad.
The 708 - 712 were DIFFERENT drives, so we can't compair.

The drive I got was marked 0202 (hardware v2; firmware v2).
Already firmware v03 is out, but dosen't seem to be helping much.

The nasty rumor running around is a HARDWARE v03 has been spoted someware.

If true, this would explain the rebate. When you got junk, you gotta dump it on some poor fools, right?
