stand alone now wont play dvd+rw discs

just installed a new nec 3500a x16 writer which burns very well.
dvd-r discs play in stand alone fine but dvd+rw will not.
the movie has burnt to the disc as it plays fine on the computer.
my old writer was a hp 200j which burnt movies to dvd+rw discs and played fine on stand alone.
i am using the same discs and tried various speeds.
what is the new writer doing different and how do i fix it?
