If I have dvd writer that writes at 4x, will buying 8x dvd+rs matter? Will it write faster to 8x media than 4x media?

You will only be able to burn as fast as your burner will allow. Now it might be possible to get a hacked firmware to burn faster, I'm really not sure.

    Hello,

No. The top speed is it. If it's 4 it writes at 4. There MAY be hacked firmware to boost the speed but that's at YOUR OWN RISK.

No. The media is rated according to how fast of a speed it will support, providing your burner will write that fast. They're backward-compatible so using an 8X media in a 4X or even 1X burner will work fine. But using say...2X media in an 8X burner will only let you write at 2X.

Each piece of blank media already has information about itself written in a ring close to the center of the disc. The writer reads that ring after you load it into the burner. The writer then knows how fast is the fastest it can write to it

You should be able to see the Media ID when it is blank.
    If in doubt, Google it.
