Need help aligning layers in Photoshop for menu

I have six layers which consist of 3 row and two columns. It looks like this:

*  X

*  X
*  X

I've aligned each row by the vertical centers. Now I want to even out the spacing between each row. I can select all the layers in a column and use 'Distribute layer vertical space'. But I can't do it for both columns and keep each row aligned. I tried linking the rows but that didn't work.

I'd get one set right, then match the rest by hand.
Use the guides or snap to grid to help line everything up.
