MY NEW NEC DVD WRITER WON'T RECOGNIZE A DVD-R

MY NEC ND 3500-AG (2.18 firmware) won't recognize a DVD-R that was probably mastered from a tabletop DVD recorder hooked up to a TV. I purchased this at a"Collector Show". No matter what program I use; Nero, Roxio DVD Copier etc. it says the disc is empty, yet it plays fine on my standalone player. I would like to make exact copies on my NEC writer to share with my friends.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

Did you try rippping it with DVD Decrypter ?

And I'm not sure if you can view a dvd-r on a standalone player without it being finalised ?

I have seen cd-r's that were not finalised & would not register on a diff. pc than it was burnt on until it was ?
But i'm not sure about dvd-r's.... never had a problem or tried to, although i see in Nero Burning Rom there is a box to check if you want to finalise but i can't uncheck mine.....

I've tried both DVD Decrypter & DVD info and both say that it's a blank disc. But it plays fine in my standalone player.

I'm not sure it's finalised, how can I tell? Is there anything else I can try or am I just out of luck making backup copies?
