Both Dell and HP make nice, rugged laptops. But I'd have to recommend HP over Dell because of Dell's awful customer service.

My wife has an HP she has been using every day for years. The thing outlasted my Compaq laptop which was the same age, got used less than the HP, and has now been dead for 5 months. It also cost several hundred dollars more than her HP. Her HP Pavilion is still going strong today.
