Hello all..and Merry Christmas!!![]()
Small problem, I have an MKV file on my pc that i would like to burn onto a DVD for use in a general dvd player (as opposed to viewing on my pc). Problem is i dont know how to go about it.
Forgive me if i'm not meant to mention these..i have DVDX Copy Platinum,DVD Decryptor,Nero6 Ultra + Windows media player (hasn't everyone?!), Real Alternative, Cyberlink Power DVD + Matroska pack (aparently to read the MKV file?). I can't get any of them to do the task in question.![]()
If anyone has any ideas they would be gratefully received.
Please note that i am able to play the file with both WMP + Real Alt.

You need to re-encode your mkv files into DVD compliant MPEG, then authur the DVD and burn!
There are plenty of guides here how to do this (not specifically mkv most will say avi but there is no real difference in the process).
With the software you have I think nero will bet you do this in one step but I've never used it and prefer to the the job manually so I get the best quality / control. Try using a +RW first in case the results are bad first time, audio can easily so out of sync. -
demultiplex the mkv/ split the video and audio with virtualdubmod or mkvextractgui
convert the video to dvd mpeg2 with tmpgenc
convert the audio to mp2 or ac2 with ffmpeggui
author and burn to dvd with tmpgenc dvd author or dvdauthorgui

Hi guys..thanks. All sounds tricky for a noob
At least i know it's not a lost cause though.
I shall look into the links you posted Baldrick (cool avatar + quality program!..I have a cunning plan?!) and see how i get on.
WOOOOSH..thats the sound of the technical talk goin over my head!!
Also thanks for posting the link to the guide..i did try to look for one, though didn't know how to word the search.
Many thanks for help on my first posting. The laziest man I ever met put popcorn in his pancakes so they would turn over by themselves!! -
Ok OK. Thats way complicated.even trying to follow the instructions link..and should re coding really take 10 hours? I dint understand.
By pure chance..i clicked the wrong page on this forum and found a guy reccommending dvdsanta.
i dloaded the demo and it sorted everything..but..cos it's the demo,it wanted to put an ad over top of everything. Is there a freeware version that's as good as this and wont put the ad? Dunt get me wrong it's not that i'm opposed to buying it,but i dunt anticipate needing the program again. Plus,it was easy peasy to work!!The laziest man I ever met put popcorn in his pancakes so they would turn over by themselves!! -
Try Nero VisionExpress as you have it. It won't give you as good results as doing with the tools seperately but if its a one off and you don't want to learn all the stuff necessary then its worth a go.
And yes it could take 10 hours to re-encode depending on your PC.
One click solutions generally arn't as good as using several individual apps that are the best in their class but there again I wouldn't backup my DVD's manually like I use to before DVDShrink -
I done it!!!!!
Quality wise..it looks real good to me,considering its an obscure English movie , and not exactly up to Hollywood quality standards anyway (i remember it of old). I got the dvdsanta to work and the easy way wins for me!!
As it fits on a 4.7 i didn't have to worry about shrinking it or anything.
Thanks for your help Tim,Merry Christmas. 8)
What are 'warez'??The laziest man I ever met put popcorn in his pancakes so they would turn over by themselves!! -
Well done. If it works for you its the right way.
Warez is stuff you have not payed for. Software you have not bought or films that you have downloaded illegally. As such they can not be discussed on this forum. Questions like I downloaded the latest hollywood block buster and need to ...... will result in a formal warning from the mods. Why do you ask? -
Ah, I see..well that's fair enough..not to talk about that stuff!!
No, I ask because when you post a reply there are several warnings saying..Don't do this/Don't do that regarding warez. Just it's not a term I've come across before, that's all.
Yeah my dvd's workin a treat,it's currently playin on my Xbox..so that can't be bad!!The laziest man I ever met put popcorn in his pancakes so they would turn over by themselves!! -
You'd be suprised how many people don't read the do's and don't before posting.
Well as long as your movie plays til the end without the audio going out of sync you're home and dry!
