Do NOT get a Dell upgrade! Not unless you want to pay twice the price of what you can get at any B&M store. $200 for a burner? Not today. Unless you want 2 burners with change left over....

I won't go into "best" as I'm only familiar with 3 different brands, and everyone will have their favorite "best".

  6. Specifically,

    NEC 3500, $62 (!) through tomorrow:

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-031&depa=0

    or

    Benq 1620, $64.99:

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-101-630&depa=1

You're probably going to get better burns with -R media on the NEC, while you'll be better able to do tests on your burns with the Benq. I'd probably choose the NEC.

The BenQ drives seem rather picky about media, so I'd recommend the latest Pioneer drive, as I don't know enough about the NEC - could be quite decent as well.

  10. I would say that Benq can be quite picky about -R media, although from what I've heard their newest drive, the 1620, is an improvement. As for being picky with +R media, I've yet to see my Benq 822 burn have problems with ANY +R discs. I'm sure the 1620 is at least as good. As for NEC drives, they are great drives, period. My NEC 1300 and 2500 are both awesome with both +R and -R discs.

Drives are typically very easy to install. You can get good media such as Prodisc for about $30 per 100, or even 'better' discs for not much more. Great deals exist all the time anymore on DVD media.

Pioneer 108 over 1000 burns and no coasters. All using a mix of 4x and 8X media. Got mine from Newegg.com.
