  1. I've tried using Nero recode over the last few weeks with limited success. When playing back a dvd the picture will periodically stutter, very briefly and then proceed. It's bearable but not perfect. I have viewed several postings here about the merits of using DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink and then burning with Decrypter, but everytime I have done this Decrypter hangs while burning (oddly enough at 100%). Lots of coasters at this point. I'm using Memorex discs and they appear to be fine for several other uses. I would like to use Nero if possible but I can't find an explanation or a solution to the stutter problem.

So, why don't you use Shrink, output to HD folder, then write it using Nero? Not that I can see why DVDDecrypter would fail (on my system it's the most reliable piece of software I've ever tried, writing data to a DVD).
No matter how I create a DVD, I always end up with a VIDEO_TS and an empty AUDIO_TS folder. I create a DVD image of those with ImgTools Classic, burn image with DVDDecrypter. 100% success rate so far.

  3. Thanks for the info.

    Tried again:

    1) used dvd decrypter
    2) used dvd shrink and placed on HD
    3) used imgtool classic to create iso file
    4) used dvd decrypter to burn

still stuttering...but dvd decrypter at least worked...

jsyk: my burner is a SONY DVD RW DW-D22A

So, the prob is not the actual burning - it's earlier in your process. Let's get back to basics - what is your source material?

I`ve used that same method to burn all my DVDs, and on
the rare occasion had some "freezes" and "stuttering".
On my part these were all do to media.
    I use a Pioneer 106 and 107.

  6. Thanks guys for the help.

Source is the original DVD - I'm backing up Christmas DVDs as they consistently will see wear and tear - everything plays fine - no skips or stutters.

If it is a media problem, is there somewhere to find out what is appropriate media for my burner.

I have seen other people cite sony dvd burners may have limitations - but no direction for resolution with regards to my burner.

This afternoon I went out and got another player. Same problem.

Generally speaking, stutters and freezing are caused by the media. Not always, but generally. The best way to test if it's the programs is to play the movie after it has been output to your hard drive. This will at least rule out the encoding/transcoding software. After that you have the burning software, and/or the burner and/or the media and/or the dvd player. You've tried two different burning softwares, so that leaves you with the burner and/or the media and/or the dvd player. You can test your DVD player by taking one of the discs you've already burnt around to a friend's/relative's house and try it in their player. The next easiest thing to test is the media.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  9. So if it was the burner are we talking about a firmware upgrade? The computer is less than a month old. Where could I obtain an upgrade that is appropriate?

    Thanks for your help.

  10. I'm playing a movie right now using nero showtime - no stutters on my hard drive.

When I run DVDinfo, i get errors on the burnt dvd. I'm not familiar with this program, does that mean it is a media issue?

    So very very confused...

    I'm using Memorex DVD+ (4x) - I mean they're decent right?

    More than likely.

Maybe. The firmware of your burner tells the burner everything about the different types of media available, like max burn speed for example. Now if it were to happen that your burner (before you bought it) had been sitting in the shop for 3 months, and the company that makes your media changed something in regard to their discs (or brought out 8X discs, for example) then it's pretty logical to deduce that your burner is not going to know much about these new discs. So maybe, maybe a firmware upgrade is necessary. I don't like to recommend them for fear of failure, and if the retailer that you bought your burner off was any good they should've done this for you anyway IMO.

The first place to look for firmware upgrades is at your burner's manufacturer's website. Any firmwares listed there are tried and tested, and may also be covered under warranty. The other side of the coin is to put a hacked firwmware on it (from here). Hacked firmwares can "unlock" your burner and burn on media quicker than the media is rated, can improve ripping speed and can also make the burner region-free but more than likely you'll have no warranty.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  12. ARGGGGGHHHHH

I've gone to the sony website and it's not listed!

    Any other ideas?

Or how about websites that suggest possible media preferences for my burner?

I edited my previous post JSYK

And again thanks for the help - the constant cursing over the past 12 hours has my wife thinking I've lost my noodle.

https://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters - put in your burner's brand and/or model and see what the media ratings show.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  14. Checked both sites Jim...

No firmware upgrades as of yet...

Memorex is not listed, but the media that has been tested all seems to be 8x speed - Could this be the problem since I'm using 4X?

I'd lean towards it being the media before being the burner. It's easier just to pop down to your local retailer and pick up 1 or 2 different brand discs, isn't it ?
    If in doubt, Google it.
