I've killed the playback of a lot of the unwanted video scenes using PGCEdit, and I have read that if I then run IFOEdit, I can "recompile" the IFOs to not include the now redundant VOBs (please correct my terminology where necessary- this is my first big project).

But how do I shrink and then write the editing DVD to DVD5 media?

I normally use DVD Shrink, but will that be intelligent nuf to not copy the redundant VOBs?

I just loaded the DVD into DVD Shrink, and most of the video scenes I cut out are still there- it seems that they have been removed from the IFO files only so that their playback is skipped.

Can PGCEdit completely detach these files, or can it only take them out of the IFO scripting?

You probably need something like vobblanker to remove them after detaching the links

Rip the dvd again and use titlesetblanker. this is replace the vob you want to remove with a blank vob.

    - PgcEdit can only truly blank (i.e. remove entirely) a whole titleset (meaning, a whole set of VOB files belonging to the same titleset for example VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, VTS_01_3.VOB, ... If what you want to remove belongs in the same titleset, then PgcEdit can "Blank all PGCs in domain" and replace the set of VOB files with a tiny tiny one.

    - The same is true of titlesetblanker: it will only blank out complete titlesets.

Both are really fast (because they just replace the VOB files, they don't read/write them), but if there's some stuff you want to keep in the titleset, then you can't use them.

    - Vobblanker can help you in that case: it can blank-out stuff down to the individual cell. So you can blank out whole titlesets, single titles, single PGCs, or individual cells. Pretty cool. The drawback is that it isn't instantaneous because it has to read the vob files, modify them and write them back, and because they're huge that takes time (10-20mn?).

    So these are your options:
    - Quickly blank out complete titlesets with PgcEdit, titlesetblanker or vobblanker (which is fast when blanking complete titlesets)
    - Blank out individual PGCs or cells with vobblanker.
    - Skip playback of individual PGCs with PgcEdit, then compress the heck out of them in shrink (for example using "still image".

    THen burn!

MenuShrink a free tool to shrink menus into stills with or without audio!
DVDSubEdit: a free tool to modify your subtitles directly inside the vob.
