I have a Hi-8mm tape and believe my friend has a 8mm camcorder.
One of his 8mm tapes looks to be the same size as my Hi-8mm tape...
....can I play my Hi-8mm tape in his 8mm camcorder?
    Thanks,

  3. Hi8 is a higher resolution, higher bandwidth video format than standard 8mm (just like S-VHS vs. standard VHS). A Hi8 machine can play back an 8mm tape, but an 8mm machine cannot play back a Hi8 tape.

many Hi-8 cams will play regular-8 tapes, but not the reverse.

  5. Actually these days the 8mm and Hi8 tapes seem to be *exactly* the same. I have bought 8mm tapes, drilled the extra hole in the casing which switches on Hi8 and recorded on them in a Hi8 camcorder. The results are identical to the much more expensive Hi8 tape.

the better ones should be metal oxide and 8mm is not .. so i thought

DAT and exabyte tapes are also the same though ...
