Can anyone recommend a good VHS head cleaning tape. I have three different (wet type) ones. You are supposed to put a few drops into the tape and then play the tape for 20-30 seconds. However all three tapes will shut down all 4 of my VCRs in less then 5 seconds. The tapes recommend if that happends to use the RECORD function, but alas it does the same thing.
I have one JVC VCR, one SEARS and two Optimus's (Radio Shack).

Personally I use a Sony never had a problem. JVC is also great, maybe yours is defective? If not try Sony there pretty hassle free.

The three head cleaners have the same effect on all of my VCRs and not just the JVC.

I've always done it the old-fashioned way:
Pop the hood
Alcohol on paper towel on all the heads and rollers
Demagnetize all heads and tape path

denatured alcohol from hardware store is best.
A cleaning cassette should work in one of the modes, play, ff, rec, etc. Otherwise take it back. Don't clean your heads if they don't need cleaning. -
Try setting the audio to "Linear" in the set-up menu, this works for my old Sanyo. When done, return to hi-fi audio.
