  1. I have a Pioneer 106D, and when I run DVD Decrypter I get the
    following message:

    I/O Error

    Device: [1:0:0] PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106d1.07 (E (ATA)
    ScsiStatus: 0x02
    Interpretation: Check Condition

    CDB:2A 00 00 00 03 00 00 00 20 00
    Interpretation: Write (10)-Sectors: 768-799

    Sense Area: 71 00 04 00 00 00 00 0E 00 00 00 00 44 D9 00 00 00 00
    33 D9 00 00

    Interpretation: Unknown ( 0x44, 0xD9)

I don't always get this message, I'd say it comes up 1 out of every 8 attempts. I had been using Memorex DVD-R 4x, but these are getting scarce, if not impossible to find, so lately I've been using the 8x. And it was only recently when I switched that I've been having the problem.

The type of disc is RITEKG05.
I'm using the latest versions of DVD Decryptor and ImgTool, and I have this problem if I'm backing up a DVD or authoring one of my own using TMPGEncDVDAuthor.

As far as I know I'm using the latest firm ware available for my drive, and I'm a little cautious about upgrading to another version even if there is one, because I don't want to lose my region-free status.

If anyone can help me, I would greatly apprciate it!

    Hey,

I've heard recently that Ritek are lying about their dye and using inferior dyes in their products. Some new Fuji dye is taking the world by storm as a result... Apparently. This MAY be true, but what speed do you burn your discs at? Try burning at a lower speed... 4x, 2x... For permanent back-ups of my original movies I always burn at 2x for maximum compatibility with dvd players with crap lasers.

    Regards,
    Kurtis Draven.

At what point does this happen? Does it only happen with these disks?

  4. I tried some Fuji 8x discs also, and they did the same thing.

The error message comes up as soon as I click on the button to write to the disc. I'm pretty sure this happens before any data is written at all.

And I had 2x selected as the write speed, I even had it this way when I used the old 4x discs. I know it's slower, but it does help to ensure positive results.

Thanks guys for helping me so far. Maybe someone can find a solution to my problem.

You might need a firmware update.

What are you trying to burn? Have you tried another burning program?

  7. I have tried Nero, and recieved a similar message.

And I suspected a firmware upgrade was the solution, but wouldn't that disable the region-free firmware that is there currently?

Not that it matters, because I have tried to upgrade the firmware before, from 1.07 to 1.08 but I'm getting an error message there too.

What is the error message you get when you try to upgrade the firmware?

It says that it's the incorrect firmware, and that it cannot be updated. The current firmware is 1.07, and i was attempting to upgrade to 1.08. I know there's supposedly a 1.09 out there as well, but I didn't find it on Pioneer's web site.

Now the 1.07 that I'm using currently is a region-free firmware that didn't officially come from Pioneer. Could that have something to do with it? If so, how do I fix this, and how do I regain region-free status whenever I do manage to get it upgraded?

I've had the very same problem .... same drive and same firmware (107 region free) it was working great then suddenly i got that error before it even started writing to the disk ... i tried everything .. reinstalling software (including windows) etc ... then i discovered the real problem .... and solved it in an instance .....i cleaned the laser on the drive using a cotton bud and some cd laser cleaning fluid .... (you have to remove the drive from the pc to do this ... alternatively use a cd laser cleaning disc although these are not as effective) after putting the drive back together and back in the pc it worked brilliantly and is still performing spot on nearly 8 months later

  11. Thanks. I'll try this.

So you were able to use the 8x discs also?

I actually bought a spindle of Maxell 4x DVD-R tonight, and they aren't working either. So we'll se how cleaning the lens works.

When you took apart the drive, how did you go about getting to the laser to clean it? I took the drive apart so far, but I'm afraid of screwing it up somehow.

If you are afraid of screwing it up, I suggest you take it to a computer repair shop to clean it.

  14. I'm just afraid of not being able to get things put baack the way they go.

Anyway, this seems to bo the solution, because when I had the drive apart, I blew some of the dust out of there and tried it, and was able to burn a disc. Looks like if I'm able to give it a proper cleaning, that might do thr trick.

You can just remove the plate that holds the disk in place while it spins ... its just fitted to the top of the drive by a couple of screws ... once this is removed the laser is easily accessible .... alternatively you can carefully slide the laser mechanism towards the back of the drive to clean the lens ... once done the laser will reset itself back to its normal position when the drive is fitted back into the pc and is powered up

  16. Psx_pirate, thanks a lot for all of your help! I'm glad someone else has had this exact same problem, and that you were able to help me so thoroughy, and nice enough to do this as well!

I blew a few dust bunnies out of the drive when I first opened it, and that has actually allowed me to burn a couple of discs, so when I get a chance I'll give it a more detailed cleaning.

    Yay!
