I'm in the market for a new dvd writer. I going with an HP since I have an HP computer. Also have owned previous HP never had a problem. My question is there are 2 models. One writes dvd+r @ 8x, and the @ 16x. Is it safe to burn at either of these speeds. right now mine burns @ 4x with no problems.

As long as the media has a write strategy foir those speeds you're safe ...and the writer supports that media at that speed. Use DVDInfo Pro to check out the media
A firmware update might help with some media brands -
I would say no,it doesn't cause any problems. I have some Verbatim 16x media and some TY 8x media that will burn at 16x and i get better burns according to Kprobe scans than i did with some crappy 4x media.
So speed isn't neccessarily the variable here,it is the quality of your burner and media more so. If you have a good 16x burner and good media that can burn 16x,that trumps a crappy burner and crappy 4x media.
I use an NEC 3500 and have been bery happy with it. HP's DVD burners aren't made by HP so i wouldn't make that a priority. I believe if i'm not mistaken that the HP 16x burner is made by BenQ or another company.
But i wouldn't pay another 20 to 30 dollars just to have it say HP if it were me.

Ok thanx....I'll look into who actually makes HP's writer...anyone atually know where i could find that info out?
I use prodisc printable 4x media now. Would prodisc be ok for 8x or 16x? Or should I stick with higher end - verbatim/memorex/etc?What We Do In Life, Echoes In Eternity.... -
Look to your left in the DVD-Writers area. I think they will say there who makes the chipset and www.cdfreaks.com could help also.
As far as the media goes, first find out who makes the burners u are looking at and then look at the qualtiy of the burns on different media either at cdfreaks or cdrinfo. My NEC makes almost perfect burns using Ritek Ricohjpn +R 4x discs at 8x, and the are ususally alot cheaper than most.
As far as 16x options ,i think only hte higher grade medias are going to give you good quality right now like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim 16x discs.
It's always hard to say because for Memorex and alot of others, they could have 4 different companies making their media so you aren't guranteed anything.

Your 4x Prodisc should burn good at 8x with your burner. Of course, you'd get the best results using the burn speed it's rated at.
HP was using NEC to make their burners. -
