VCDs. It was a steap learning curve and took a long time to master.

I'd vote for DVDs, but it's not on the list.

If in doubt, Google it.

SVCD took the longest for me to make. I'm reading this as the longest as in time wise?
I was using a Pentium Pro 200 to encode to SVCD, so the time factor was huge.
Longest, as in time to learn, was also SVCD. I-Author has some hidden features that took a while to play with, but doesn't compare to Philips SVCD authoring software.
DVD is by far the easiest to master. The DVD Authoring software is just so much easier to use. Take a look at Philips VCD authoring toolkit, or Philips SVCD authoring toolkit, then compare it to Maestro or Scenarist.
Even most noobs can create a movie only DVD inside an hour, but the interface of the older (S)VCD tools were anything but user friendly.
I created my first DVD 6 hours after I installed my DVD burner. Used DVDit! to author, Canopus MVR to capture, Primo DVD to burn the title set on my Pioneer A03 with the included Pioneer media. Still have the DVD around somewhere, it was a VHS conversion of Scenes From the Bar, starring Kobe Tai -
When I first became interested in making VCDs I had to search high and low for reasonably priced hardware and software that would work together. In 1998, the stuff was next to impossible for me to find. So I put it on the back burner for a year or two. Then I had to figure out what all the specs were about. When I switched to DVDs a couple of years ago, it really wasn't that difficult to make the transition. Afterall, I knew about bit rates, frame rates and such by then. It was merely a task of getting used to the new MPEG specifications. Then I bought a DVD Recorder, so now I'm getting used to working with VOB files instead of MPG files. I expect I'll be getting used to working with HDTV video files and Blue Ray burners/recorders in another couple of years.

What did you use to create your first VCD?
DVD took longest for me. -

The entire process took ~2 days to complete. mm2c ran at 12fps, which was the fasted m2v decoder around!
Another big problem is that there were no mac guides back then. The programs were there, but no one had typed up how to do it. -

VCD. I spent lots of time trying to perfect my capturing, encoding, and burning technique. In the end it was all just a waste of time since VCD was dead even then. Lots of wasted CD-Rs too.

VCD. My first forage into this business, making all n00b mistakes (using Nero, for one thing...
)
DVD to DVD-R, I could teach my mother to do, mostly because there are so many good and actually user (stupid) friendly tools available, whereas there are a lot more (and time consuming) steps involved in the DVD to VCD process, and so much more that can (thus will) go wrong.

VCD's, I remember telling my nephew's that I was close to getting it to work. Took months. Must have been in 98 when I got my 1st CD burner.
