Well, I know a few things about converting digital video formats, but have never transferred an Analog Video tape into a digital format.

I have a set of poor quality video tapes (6 * 1.5 hours) and need to convert them to DVD or something digital as master copy (to keep the quality).

    I need to know:

    - what video card to use for input
    - what software to capture it
    - what format to convert it to
    - what software to enhance the video and audio quality
    - what data rate should I use for audio/video
    - what software to author DVD

    Thanks a lot!

In all seriousness there are an incredible number of variables to consider, and there simply is no "best" answer to anything.

You need to ask yourself how deeply you intend to commit yourself to your new hobby. (In terms of time and money.) Most of here will agree that most people will be perfectly happy with a quality DVD recorder most of the time. However, if you are truly serious you may want to purchase a Canopus device for your video conversions. (Capture cards fall in-between.) So, you should study the numerous guides this site has to offer. There is a wealth of information here.

As for me, I use a DVD recorder. When I feel the need to make custom menus or chapters, I'll rip my DVD-R to my computer hard drive and re-author as I see fit.

    1. Pioneer 420H-s DVD recorder
    2. DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to my computer HDD
    3. (Optional) Womble MPEG VIDEO WIZARD to add audio/video transitions. NOTE: MPEG files aren't really intended for editing, but MVW seems to tackle this problem well.
    4. TMPGEnc DVD Author or Ulead WorkShop 2 to re-author. (TMPGEnc DVD Author is more-or-less the standard.)

You might also need a number of "tools" to help you prepare your files: VirtualDubMod, Rejig, & TMPGEnc (differerent from TMPGEnc DVD Author) are among them.

Other people "do their own thing" in an entirely different manner. So, before you make any purchases, you need to do some extensive studying. Listen to what everyone has to say, but decide for yourself what is best for you.

    Good Luck!

P.S. If you aren't already on the brink of insanity (like me), I promise you will be in a year or so.

I use Pinnacle AVDV which comes with a capture card for analog or
digital camcorders, plus software for editing and burning to dvd. At
CircuitCity or other fine stores for less than $100.
