  1. I just got powerlink cable internet hooked up for a lady and she thinks its slow. There use to be a couple sites that had broadband speed tests on them but they are slipping my mind right now. Anyone know what the site urls are?

  10. Thanks guys. Tried them all out. I'm evidently running anywhere from about 1.7Mbps to 2.7Mbps with about 238 kbps up. Not too bad considering they claim 3mbps down and 256kbps up. Her computer is only getting 384kbps down and about 184kbps up. She only a few blocks away from me and running a different modem, but hers is hooked through the USB connection since her NIC seems to be blown. I know USB isn't as good but that seems like a huge amount of difference to me. Guess I'll clean all the junk out of her system this weekend though and make sure spyware isn't contributing as well.

I just used this one and I'm getting 2.6mb DL faster than a T1 Line (1.54mb) according to the site.

    *EDIT*

    Now it's 2.7mb :P

    One I use:http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest
That one at bandwidthplace seems a little quick to get a proper speed rating. It says 2.7M down. All the others I use say about 4M down and 400K up.

I would advise to try several sites, and at different times of the day if you are using cable to get a fair rating. My speed varies greatly during the day, depending on usage of my local node.

Funny thing is P2P is slow no matter what time. I assume they found a way to choke it down.

  15. found the speakeasy test at broadbandreports.com for a site in my state and I'm getting a little over 2800 on it. The others were in the midwest to the west coast up to 3000 miles away. No wonder they were a little slower.

  20. Yeah I was using the speakeasy site in the same state I'm in. Seems to be the most accurate.

I have slow connection because were i live and i dont want cable (no caps really cheap DSL I DO have) ..

Your download speed : 969612 bps, or 946 kbps.
    A 118.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 136869 bps, or 133 kbps.

I could have 3meg down / 800 up no problems for the same price , but i would have to drop one of my phone lines i was told ...

Make sure wire is good 20-24 gauge wire going from your box to your computer. Too many times you see cheap 'telephone' grade wire that couldn't carry enough wattage to light a 1 watt bulb going from the persons wall jack to their computer. Cheap wire can actually decrease your performance.

    Hello,

Hmm.... You know that might be part of the reason I only get 300kbps.

I have my line split from the room next door and run a phone cable from that to hook up to my dsl modem.

    Would that effect my speed????

Electricity and wire is like Water and a pipe....you couldn't find a better analogy. The larger the pipe the more water you can put through it but if you keep splitting it the less pressure your going to have.... or in your case current.

In theory thisis true.. BUT in pracice its not with cable modems.. as i posted in another thread i use to split my cable in my room 3 times.. for a total of 6 if i remember right.. anyway.. i was getting intermitent cable drops to my modem.. when it was working i was getting pretty close to full speed rated.. BUT again it woudl drop or disconnect the modem off and on.. after long time of calling etc i found out that my "handshake" signal or the connected light on the modem had too much resistance and that caused it to drop.. again.. speeds were very close to full.. once i ran a dedicated line from the outside box it never disconnected and the speed is only slightly better if at all..

The way that it would be like the wire or pipe is if you had two computers using it at the same time and both were dl at the same time.. it would be spread 50% speed over both.. and 1/3 if 3 etc..

    Hello,

    Thanks heywould3.

I think I'm happy with my speed. I also don't want to invest in powerline or another phoneline for only marginal gains in speed. And it's only hooked to one computer right now.

what yoda says is true -- i mean how much speed do you really need , unless you are downloading movies or something (5 a day) and i know no one here would do such a thing ever ...
