    Hello,

This is going to be a public service announcement. Seeing that it's a new month again: BACKUP UP YOUR DATA!.

There, I'll bump this on the first of every month to remind people. When I get home tonight I'll pull out some dvd-rs and backup my files.

Well, it's partly for me. I thought of it and if I didn't write it down somewhere I'd forget. Hopefully I won't forget to do it tonight!

    Back up??

Now, if you back up all your data where is the fun in a system crash???

Heck, I think trying to get everything back is half the fun and if you can't, then you have something to bitch about and some "war" stories to tell.

Besides, I have all the programs I've downloaded, their serial numbers and/or cracks burnt on a disc already

My biggest worry is backing up my porn collection. I'm looking for a 160 GB DVD-R, I sure don't want to burn 40 DVD-R's

    Hello,

Why don't you get a hd-dvd burner???? (30-40 gb would be nice per disc!)

  16. Hello,

It's that time again!!! BACKUP YOUR DATA!!
This is good advice! I also want to add to this incase you didn't backup your information and your hd crashes. If you don't have backups to restore to and you have info still on your hd that you want to recover, there is something you can try that may let you access your files and burn them to cds/dvds. Download and burn either the Slax or Knoppix Linux livecd:
    www.slax.org
    www.knoppix.net
This can be used as a rescue disk (yes it can also be used as a primary os but in this case its only to access the data) to access your hard drive. The whole operating system will boot from the cd and run in the RAM, never touching your hard drive but will probably let you access the hard drive (depending on the corruption) and maybe burn your files off. Also the live-cds have auto hardware detect, so you can access the internet and use a word processor during this time as well.
I just wanted to suggest this incase you get into a fix where you cannot access your files and want to try one more thing before reformatting.

I don't formally "back up" anything at home per se, I normally just acquire heaps and heaps of CDs with stuff (programs, documents etc) I've burnt on them. Any time I do a OS reinstall, out comes the 50 or so discs, each one with one or two apps that I need. In an ideal world, I should probably look at ghosting once I get the setup exactly right, then restore from this ghost image if I need a reinstall.

At work however, I have to change our DLT tape daily.
    If in doubt, Google it.
