I just bought a Sony +- DVD stand alone recorder, as a replacement for my Philips 985 which bit the dust about a month agoand which I have not found anyone who can fix it.
It has some better editing capabilities than some of the other units I've seen, but to get the full capability you have to use DVD-RW media in -VR mode, which, from what I understand results in disks that are incompatible with most standalone DVD players.
Unless I use -VR, then I can't make manual chapters, which I think I want on at least some of the disks I record.
What I had been doing with the Philips was recording programs on DVD+RW media (for the editing capabilities the Philips offered) and then copying the result to DVD-R using DVD Decrypter for archiving.
Is there an analogous procedure that I could use to convert from VR mode to either DVD-R (Video) or DVD+R?
If there is no way, I'm tempted to take the Sony back and just get the current Philips unit which seems to be similar to the 985.
Any insights?
Thanks,

or do you mean reauthor on your standalone recorder? -
You might wan to change that Sony dvd recorder for a Panasonic. Sony burners are known to have alot of problems

You can edit and chapter on the PC, it doesn't need to be done on the recorder. Beware of editing on the recorder and copying on the PC, it can cause audio sync problems with some programs. The discs I edited on the standalone and copied on the PC have a little bit of the edited part in them when copied. Better just to do it all on the PC.
