What works with Plextor 712A besides TY?

Fellow 712A owners, please help...

Are there any other brands of 8X -R besides TY that is compatible with 712A? From Plextor's own web site, they state that Maxell, Mitsubishi, TDK and Verbatim are recommended media brands. I had just tried TDK last night, and have not had a successful burn yet; so I'm not sure now how much I trust Plextor's list. Not to mention that I'd like to find one I can buy in bulk -- Maxell and Verbatim are too expensive most of the time, and other brands on that list I can't even find in the stores.

I will start buying TY if that's my only bulk choice; but there has got to be other brands that work too. Any suggestions? I don't want to have to buy another burner!

Verbatim bulk shouldn't be too expensive (if you're in the US that is). At buy.com you can get inkjet printable Datalifeplus 8x + or -R 50 disc spindles for around $40 with free shipping. As for Maxell, if you have a Staples or Office Depot around you might want to check them out; the ones around here are stocking Maxell 8x media, $15 for 15 discp spindles.

Just because the spindle may say VERBATIM or MAXELL doesn't mean they are actually the brands that Plextor supports. Make sure you look at the actual media codes. Some VERBATIM & MAXELL discs are manufactured by RITEK which is on the COMPATIBLE LIST OF MEDIA not the RECOMMENDED LIST. Use dvdidentifier or dvdinfo pro to find out the exact media codes. Use the RECOMMENDED BRANDS of list of dvd media that Plextor supports. Just because it's on the COMPATIBLE LIST does not guarantee it will work with the drive.

Use good quality dvd media like TAIYO YUDEN which can be purchased for a reasonable price from RIMA.COM. Some MAXELL discs are manufactured by TAIYO YUDEN. If you purchase MAXELL SPINDLES make sure they say "MADE IN JAPAN" because the ones "MADE IN TAIWAN" are RITEK G04.

Eek, and I had just bought two 25 packs of Maxell from Office Depot because they were on sale... And these are made in Taiwan... So I might as well just return them and use the money on TY instead then?

I still can't believe that TY will be the only bulk media that is recommended by Plextor though. This is taking the term "picky about the media" to the extreme!

You can purchase other brands of media in bulk but TAIYO YUDEN is the best media to use not only for Plextor burners but other brands as well. In my opinion using cheaper media that may not playback at a later time is risky for my precious dvd collection. Take a look at the Plextor forum at cdfreaks.com they have lots of information on your drive.

I was using Prodisc for the longest time, and was extremely happy with it, and not realizing that 712A and Prodisc are not exactly a match, so that threw me off a bit...

I have been going to cdfreaks.com; but all the talks now seem to concentrate on the new 716 model, not so much on 712A anymore...

Is there a difference between the TY sold by supermediastore.com and rima.com?

not that i know of. i've purchased from RIMA.COM and have not had any problems with them. although there have been others who have posted they had problems with supermediastore.com or other online stores. i'll continue to purchase TAIYO YUDEN printable DVD-R discs from RIMA.COM.

I haven't personally seen any 8x Maxell media that wasn't made in Japan (though I've heard there are 25 disc spindles of the +R that are RitekR03 ), and all of the Verbatim 8x media out now in the US is MCC media. Verbatim would probably be the safest bet if he didn't want to have to worry about looking on the package to see where it was made to try to determine the MID.
