I'm bringing in VCR via a WIN TV pvr 250 on mpeg2. The files play fine on the PC. I then TRY and write them to a DVDR (new Sony) using MYDVD (which totally sucks), ULEAD (kinda works) and another one that I can't remember the name of but, it was really bad as well.
The question here is that if I bring in a 4mb/sec file on WinTV card it writes (Ulead) and plays but, the quality is bad. If I bring in a 6mb file, it writes fine but, hangs up and eventually stops playing. What does play is really good quality.
I missing a peice of this puzzle and am not sure if there is some intermediate SW that will render these files to an acceptable format. I thought mpeg2 was.
I really appreciate any help.
Thanks

use a tool that doesn't reconvert anything like tmpgenc dvd author.
use good dvd media. -
Ympgenc dvd author is the way to go! I also have MYDVD which is horrible. Roxio aint much better either.
-
Better media, slower burn rate, different format (+R or -R) or better DVD player.
Anyone of those 4, BTW Ulead VS8 works very well, if it's renecoding after you capture select "do not convert compliant files" and it is intermediate. -
Thanks for the replies and thanks for moving this thread as well.
I'm using Verbatim DVD's and I just bought Nero this morning and now I find out that Nero won't just burn DVD's from mpeg2 (I think?). I wish ya'll could suggest a good converter?? I've been reading and reading here and this has gotten to be an expensive hunt.... new capture card, 250gb hd and a bunch of SW...lol. I don't remember CD burning to the pain of learning that this is.
Thanks again for the help

This is how I burn DVD's using Mpeg2 from a VCR source. I have a Sony Vaio so I use their program GigaPocket to record. I then output that file to Mpeg2. From there I use TMPGenc DVD Author, it is not a fancy or great program, but it gets the job done, and is easy to use (If you don't need to create fancy menus with video/motion this is a great program). This program will output and create a DVD authoring folder, with dvd-compliant files (.vob) In Nero, I select the DVD-Video option on the wizard, place all the files in the video_ts folder (nothing goes in the audio folder) burn it, and presto you have an authored DVD!

This is my complete way of capturing - very simple, except that it requires a lot of hard disk space though.
First for your issue just like Baldrick said; something that doesn't reconvert anything.
For burning I could try using DVDAuthorGui 0.992 (there are three versions of GUI's that use DVDAuthor which is a freeware command line I think - this GUI is easily recognizable by small fonts on menu bars)
But First you have to demultiplex your mpeg-2 files.
Then if there IS something wrong most likely DVDAuthor will stop and tell ya there is an error.
--- note: Just wanted to point out that I have capaibility to capture directly to DVD but I avoid it ---
As far as my VHS>DVD go, I capture with VirtualDub to avi at 352x480 using YUY2 color space.
Then I would have to extract wav file (save wav) from avi because of sync issues (this is I think normal operation) - also with VirtualDub. If VirtualDub doesn't work for you try VirtualVCR.
Then I would use Cinemacraft Encoder Basic (actually Tmpgenc will do this too but instead of VOB I would just make it an mpg file) because of it's option quickness, speed of encoding, quality. I would encode my video twice (I found a new method but I stick with this one still most of the time); that's where tricky part come in. One time I would encode as is while the other I would select different option in Advanced Setting under Output top field stream first (you would do the similar thing in Tmpgenc by selecting Advanced Tab I think and change the source file field order to B or A). That will produce two mpeg-2 files, out of which, one will be properly deinterlaced during playback.
Then author using DVDAuthorGUI, burn with Nero to DVDRW FIRST and check which file was OK - reauthor again, burn to DVD-R and it's done.
Even though there is quite a considerable amount of steps it's worth it. No menus, no options just straight up VHS on DVD (with the exception of chapters - if needed easily done with DVDAuthorGui)
So far I haven't burned a coaster yet with DVDRW. -
First of all, thanks Kelly, Rick and Dink. I just burned my first DVD and I think I'm gonna cry..lol. This has been an obsesive thing (for me) that needs to package by someone in a complete format. I figured it had been done by now but, noooo. I used Santa to covert it (only took 2 hours for an hour of video to convert)..lol. But, it worked(1x write on Nero) and it has the quality I wanted. A little noise here and there but, works. I was concered that I was trying to put too much info onto the disk. I'm gonna try TMGenc and DVDauthor (already downloaded) cause the Santa takes so long to compile. (2.4 ghz@100% process time). ITs just mind boggling thats so much is involved in this. I stayed away from it because I knew it was new a few years ago but, assumed it was click and play by now
Really.... Thanks again!!
