Hi,
I'm looking at buying my first DVD recorder and don't want to have any nasty surprises, coasters or other " I thought it could do that " experiences
I simply want it to do the following:
Burn 2 hour DVD's that can have simple automatically assigned chapter points throughout.
I want a simple menu screen at the start of the Disk
Record from firewire or s video without problems
I would prefer it if it burnt in DVD - R.
I spoke with someone at sony about the RDR-GX7 who said that chapter points could only be allocated on a DVD-wr version 1.1 disk and not on any other Disk. Is this the same for most other brands ?
Would the DVD's be compatible with most stand alone DVD players ?
All I do is read about people's nightmare experiences with different models, etc etc. There must be a few brands that have created reliable recorders.
Anybody out there completely happy with a few brands & models they can suggest to me
Thanks
Scott

Sure, you can input what specs you want, the recorders are with dvd writers:

The Pioneer DVRs have an option to automatically place chapters every 10 or 15 minutes (or not at all) on DVD-R or DVD-RW video mode recordings. You need to record in video mode (rather than the editable VR mode) in order to have a DVD that is playable on other DVD players.
When you go to the link in handyguy's post, choose "Only Desktop DVD Recorders" in the Search In: button. -

Good question! I am so busy with my video production business that I didn’t have chance to check…
…I guess the successor would be DMR-E65. -

e60 has no analog 5.1 or digital audio input....Also, won't do hdtv. Since we are going to be using hdtv soon, might be better to get one with it.

I have the Panasonic E80 for almost one year use it ever day never had a problem with it.

He did say trouble free... I don't consider less than a year to qualify as trouble free. Anyone with a 2yr old still working?
-
None of them are trouble free.
Some have quality problems.
Some have blank media problems.
Some have power problems.
Some have drive problems.
Panasonic is surely not immune, and even the JVC (the one getting my top rating) is not immune. None of them are. I've never to this day encountered a 100% perfect machine, and likely enver will. A DVD recorder is merely a special micro-computer, nothing more, nothing less.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

fwiw, the sony rdr-gx7 can put automatic chapter marks at 6 or 15 min. intervals on all types of disks it burns..the manual chapter marks are only on the VR format

It still feels like a work in progress. But starting to resolve its self so to speak.
I am enjoying a Pioneer 220S. Its the model without firewire. The 320S has Firewire. It has been very solid. Takes both name brand media and inhouse Fry's brand media without problems. Its a - unit. Has marks every None/10/15 minutes.
Good luck on your hunt. -
I live in the US, and have owned two Pioneer DVR-210s DVD Recorders for six months. Both have been 100% trouble free. The best feature is "Manual Recording," which allows you to select the bit-rate. (MN19 or higher for best quality.) I wish there were a few more features: More menu backgrounds (only 9 available), and an MPEG Audio option. Very few machines have not been able to play the discs I've recorded. (I have not tested VR mode or the DV in/out.) TIP: Don't buy cheap discs. That would be almost like buying cheap fuel for your automobile, then wondering why it performs poorly.

I can certainly name some never to get:
LITE-ON DVD+RW SOHW-802S (I get a coaster about 1 out of 3 uses); some are "surprise" coasters...at the very end of the movie, the final 15-30 minutes is unwatchable.
EXT DVD±RW|FANTOM DL USB2.0 12X This burnt one good disc in about 20; tried two different computers. Same result.
BTW, I bought the above dvd recorder from Newegge; THEY DID NOT GIVE ME BACK A FULL REFUND AND THEY RECIEVED THE RECORD BACK WITHIN 2 WEEKS.
NEVER NEVER NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM NEWEGGE. -
No DVD Recorder is 100% but the top name brand are at least very good, JVC, Lite-On, Pioneer, Sharp. The Good are Panny, sony, Philips. All the rest are between Fair & Bad!!!
