I posted awhile back about this problem but a few months back now my hard drive crashed and till now I haven't needed the space. Now though I want to use that space but can't remember how I overcame the 137GB barrier in WinXP.
I installed SP1 like Microsoft recommends but from here I am lost. Any ideas from here?

You could put a partition in there to make it smaller. That's what I ended doing for mine. I split the drive 50/50 and i works fine now

Here's what shows up in Disk Management:
What I want to do is turn that 21GB of unallocated space into another logical extended partition like I have done with the other partitions. Windows doesn't let me do that though because when I go "create partition" under the menu it only allows me to create another primary partition.
Anyone got an idea how to do a logical partition? What would happen if I created that 21GB as a primary partition? -
Never seen that before. What program are you using to create the partitions?
Have you tried Partition Magic? -

MORE INFORMATION
Basic disks and volumes
Basic disk storage supports partition-oriented disks. A basic disk is a physical disk that contains primary partitions, extended partitions, or logical drives. Partitions and logical drives on basic disks are also known as basic volumes. You can create up to four primary partitions, or three primary partitions and one extended partition, that contain logical drives.

usualy the maker has software to enable the rest of the space after sp1 is installed. what type of drive do you have?
-
Sorry, been distracted with my speeding fine.
I'm not sure what drive I have, it used to be a Western Digital but that died and was replaced with another brand. I might crack open the case later to have a look what the brand is. -
right click on the drive under my computer>properties>hardware

Ultra ATA Card?
Intel Application Accelerator?
I think either of these will get you past the 137gb limitation. -
I installed a 250GB drive on XP SP1, no partitions just one big drive for video, no problems at all. Did not do anything special for installation than I have with any other drive.
-
Ditto with the 160GB on mine. Nothing different - just one big partition.
-
It's not Windows that is the problem, it's the motherboard chipset. Am I not correct?
-
yeah its really not that big of prob if the drive is not your OS drive. but look, his is disk 0.

yeah i had to go through that last week
run maxblast3 after sp1 update

I think smearbrick may be right, it is a hardware limitation, rather than a limitation imposed by the OS.
-
If it was a hardware limitation, the OS wouldn't see the extra space.

i wonder if he ever got it fixed, i mean we're still talking about it and all
-
Probably more worried about the ticket. We offered our help and he damn well better fix it.

Alrighty, settle grettle.
I cracked open the case and had a look at the hard drive because Windows wasn't reporting it properly in the Device Manager.
Turns out it was a Seagate drive so I downloaded their utility but it still only allowed me to do a primary partition.
Anyway, ended up doing that and now I have the extra hard drive space again.
Thanks to everyone again for their help. -
BTW dynamic disks are not for the like of us poor folk .. they are only to be used in v. special circumstances....
SAn?? NAS? superserver?Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons. -
..or just plain old RAID.
You weren't going to get anything other than a primary partition because you had exceeded the limit for extended partitions.Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.
