After re-installing XP I find that Outlook express now downloads 2 copies of each email, and how do I get rid of that log in window every time I log on? Any suggestions?

Check to make sure your mail account isn't showing up twice in Outlook Express. If you remove the ASP.NET account in Users in Control Panel, Windows should log you in automatically.

Thanks mate, this forum rocks. Another question, if you don't mind. It appears I have 2 operating systems, and I have to press enter to select one when I boot up. Any way to stop that?

If you don't really have 2 OS's then you might want to check your boot.ini file. This from MS: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022 You can edit it to remove the reference to a second OS.

I usually do a clean install with a repartition, reformat and reinstall of the OS. Then you shouldn't see all that.

  5. It sounds like you didn't format(erase) your drive before reinstalling,right-click on My Computer->Properties->Advanced->Startup and Recovery then select which OS to startup with and untick "time to display".

Ah, yes, but you know what you are doing.

Anyway, I have altered it to a 5 second wait. Thanks Guys.

I switched out a motherboard a while back and did a repair install to save from doing a clean install and having to put all the programs back in. It also comes up with two choices when it boots. But I'm too lazy to go back in and do it the proper way as the system works fine otherwise.

But I got it down to 1 second, so it's not really noticeable. If it works for you as is, good enough. Sometimes not doing a clean install can cause problems, so not really recommended.

XP doesn't seem to like to do a clean install over what it sees as a perfectly good OS. I used a Win98 startup floppy in the past to do a repartition to remove the OS, but now I boot from a Windows PE CD and destroy the old install by deleting the Windows folder, then the XP install disc will do the repartition and reformat without any argument.

You can delete the old partition in a winxp install,no need to do it with any other discs.

I bought a new computer with a Genuine xp and I want to give my old computer to an old lady who lives across the hall and she have a very old computer that came with the Home Edition of XP and I want to put it on the computer I am giving her. Please help.. I am a novice at these things but pick up kinda quickly

The xp was probably determined ungenuine because it was licensed in that old ladies older computer. You probably will have to get buy a brand new license of xp home edition for your old computer if you intend on giving it to your neighbor (old lady down the hall).
