MacTheRipper 2.0.1 is now available. From now on, I'll be distributing this as a .dmg.bz2 archive, to avoid problems with older versions of Stuffit Expander breaking executables. New in this version:
    •*Minor bugfixes,
•*Compiled with Xcode 1.5 for improved performance and stability,
•*Changed the progress bar code to decrease the tax on CPU when MTR is in focus.
Hopefully, this version will eliminate some crashing problems our users experienced. As always, let us know if you have any problems with it. Grab your copy here:

    Happy ripping!

  3. Any chance that MTR will rip DVDs from regions other that my iBook superdrive (Matshita UJ-825) is set to? It didn't work with MTR 2.0.
Any other suggestions to get around this problem are greatly appreciated.

  4. I thought that when you ripp a dvd is rips the region and you can make it any region or do you have to select which regions you want the DVD to be? hepl

  5. the superdrive of newer macs (UJ-815 and up, i think) is so sophisticated that it won't let MTR (and apparantly other ripping software) access a DVD that is set to a region other than the superdrive.
E.g., MTR just doesn't work if you try to rip a region 2 DVD when your superdrive is set to region 4.

Nope, MTR will likely never be able to rip DVDs from other regions on the Matshita UJ-815, 816 and 825 drives with RPC2 (region-locked) firmware. You need to install RPC1 (region-free) firmware on those drives to rip DVDs from other regions. RPC1 firmware is available for the 815 and 816 drives, but not yet for the 825 drive. Until such firmware is available, you will have to use a different drive or computer to rip DVDs from other regions.

Are you sure about that? Because my UJ-816 Region 1 drive rips Region 2 stuff perfectly. No firmware or other modifications needed.
If it isn't broken, take it apart and find out why.

Then yours is the exception. I've gotten countless reports of this problem, and it's usually traced back to the use of one of those three models. Out of curiosity, what's your firmware revision # on that drive?

  9. MacTheRipper worked perfectly on my previous G4 and a friend's PowerBook G4 with Combo Drives. But I have problems with my new PowerBook G4 with SuperDrive. I get error messages like: Read failed for 75 blocks at 0, Mirror of Title set 1 failed, Mirror of DVD failed. Is the problems caused by my SuperDrive?

Yes. The Matshita UJ-815, 816 and 825 drives will not rip DVDs from other regions with their default firmware. The 815 and 816 drives have RPC1 (region-free) firmware available, which will allow you to rip DVDs from any region. The 825 drive doesn't have RPC1 firmware available yet, but apparently, someone is working on it. The discs you're having problems with are from a different region than the one the drive is set to, right?

  11. No, I have problems with discs from my own region (region 2). I have a 15" PowerBook G4 with a UJ-825 drive. The same discs seem to work fine with my girlfriends 12" PowerBook with a ComboDrive.

Try playing the discs with DVD Player before you rip them.

I didn't answer your question several months ago because I missed it somehow. Or, maybe I did it out of spite. I don't know. Anyway, System Profiler says this:

    Model: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-816
    Revision: DXJ3

I used it to rip the Invisible Man TV series, which is only available in a region 2 release, and only as the first season. I want the second season dammit.

  14. Sorry for my very late respond. I've found the error. My DVD player was set to region 1, I need region 2. I'm not sure, but maybe I haven't used the DVD player on my new PowerBook until now, so I didn't know it was wrong. But now I have changed to region 2 and everything works fine

  15. Any chance Mactheripper will be able to rip from a video_ts folder?
I have been backing up a few dvd's lately but some were scratched and Mactheripper gave an error to this effect. I was able to restart in os 9 and copy the video_ts folder to the hard drive, which I couldn't do in OS X????? I then had to use dvd_backup to rip the dvd, which worked, but I would have rather used Mactheripper.
    So any chance?

Not at the moment, probably. In MacOS 9, you can use DVDExtractor 0.9b to rip the DVD directly. If OS 9 was able to copy the entire DVD, maybe enabling 'ForceRead' mode in MTR would make it work for that DVD. Also, it's possible that the method you're using in MacOS 9 doesn't have very good error handling, and is introducing errors in the ripped product. It would be better to try to clean the DVD, or try to get other copies of those movies if they fail with MTR and DVDBackup...

  17. Thanks for the reply.
I'm only copying the video_ts folder to hd by dragging to from the disk to the desktop, not using any application. Then I return to OS X and drag the video_ts folder onto dvd_backup. Maybe there will be errors, I don't know but the disks played fine when burned.

  18. I have done this as well. My region is set to 1. I had to hit cancel when prompted to change my region when trying to rip a region 2 disc. I fiddled around, leaving MTR open when I did this - or I didn't answer the prompt and MTR was alreay running (I can't remember exactly).

    It eventually worked.
