Ok I bought the 80 wire 40 pin and connected my pioneer 108 and combo drive to the secondary ide controller. Question: Does the pioneer 108 hate being on secondary and rather on primary? I have my hard drive on primary. My pioneer is on Ultra DMA 4, I noticed that it takes some time for the speed to show up on dvd decrypter. It shows Unknown for a few seconds and then goes on. Is this normal? Should I switch my hard drive to secondary and the pioneer 108 and combo to primary? Does it matter the length of the cable? I got a 24'in and noticed its too big , so I jammed it in there. A 18' in then a better choice?

connect your dvdrom on to the same ide as your hard drive. a shorter IDE CABLE would be better. or you could get a PCI IDE CONTROLLER CARD and hook up your hard drive to it. then use the primary master ide from your motherboard for the 108, use the secondary slave or master ide on your motherboard for the dvdrom.

I believe sssax 2003 has given you the wrong info.

Connect your HDD to the Primary IDE and your optical drives to the Secondary IDE.

DO NOT connect your HDD and optical drive on the same IDE.

answer no you can put the 108 on your secondary ide as master.

Should I switch my hard drive to secondary and the pioneer 108 and combo to primary?
leave your HARD DRIVE connected to your primary ide master

a 18 in should be fine but make sure you're using a 80 pin cable. there has been a discussion about using a 80 pin cable vs a 40 pin cable at the Pioneer 108 forum at cdfreaks.com

There's nothing wrong in connecting a hard drive on the same ide as a optical drive like a dvdrom. It doesn't slow down the hard drive that much. I had a set up like that before and didn't have any problems with it. I ended up changing the configuration when I added in more hard drives and optical drives. The hard drives are now all connected to my pci ide controller card.
