ok, i have an mpeg1 file, and i want to make a dvd with it. i cant import it into iDVD because it says its an invalid format. so i used both MPEGstreamclip and DropDV to try to convert the file to .dv, but the audio is all out of sync, and the video speeds up in random sections, so that's out. how can i convert it to a format that i can import to iMovie then make chapters for and import to iDVD?

Does it play normally in quicktime?
Can you post some more info about the mpeg (command-I) in quicktime.

    Hi brigade,

Use AVICodec on the file and post the details here.

Also, compare those to the specs for a valid DVD compliant MPEG - see "What Is... DVD" in the top left of the page.

Your MPEG1 needs to meet those specs - resolution (XXX x YYY), framerate (depends on whether you're PAL or NTSC - Hint: Update your location in your profile) and audio frequency (48KHz).

Only then can you author it to DVD disc.

Sounds like you've lucked out and gotten a bad mpg, how rare 8)
You say it plays fine in QT, how about Streamclip? Sometimes you can fix a bad mpg with Streamclip by converting it to a .TS and then exporting from the .TS. You should also run the 'Fix Timecode Breaks' on the mpg before you convert to .TS.

I suppose you used the feature in Streamclip to break the DV into Segments for iMovie? Nifty. So how did the previous segments work? Were they all out of sync and varying speeds? You probably have a few bad spots on the original. Best bet is to use Streamclip to isolate the bad spots by splitting the file before and after the speed changes. Lotsa choices, I'd try splitting the original at the bad spot(s) and converting that section to .TS in one shot. Then, use the Export to DV on the individual .TS files. Sounds like a lot of work, especially since all this work might not help. Bad mpgs...how unique

there are many spots where the video speeds up, so it would be impossible to list them. however, i want to import this file into iDVD/iMovie so i can create chapters and a menu. how would i do this??

if it plays properly in quicktime (and you say it does), you can use ffmpegX to export to dv (be sure that 'decode with quicktime' is chosen in the options tab).
This DV should be compatible with iMovie.

    8) I was thinking of suggesting ffmpegX, but I've wasted soooooo much time on bad mpgs that I find it hard to suggest to others to do the same. If ffmpegX doesn't fix it, it's virtually hopeless. Best bet is to find another copy of the file somewhere that isn't corrupt.

And if you absolutely have to have a copy.... Find a way to connect your Mac to a Camcorder/VCR/DVD Recorder and record the movie as you play it back in QT. Then, you would have to recapture it. That's going to the extreme :P
