  1. Howdy Guys

Can someone tell me the best format for converting DVD to when ripping it to a playable file format on my hard-drive. Is it AVI or what??

Im also looking for a program to do it. One that keeps the quality of the movie intact and allows easy re-conversion back to a DVD burnable format

    Thanks Yowie

The general rule of thumb is conversion = quality loss. It is rare to be able to retain the same quality while reducing the file size greatly when your source is DVD. You may be able to convert to AVI using DivX or XviD with decent results, but you will struggle to retain this when you go to convert back to MPEG-2 later on.

To keep the quality intact, as well as be readily convertible back to DVD (at that same quality), I would look at ripping the DVD to your HD and leaving it as IFO, BUP and VOB files (or an ISO file), or possibly feeding it into DVDShrink and compressing it down to fit on one DVDR as same.

Can I ask why you don't just burn it to disc, and play it off the disc at all times ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  3. Use DVD Decrypter to rip the files from your DVD and copy to your hard drive. You can let Decrypter burn a DVD at that point or not.

You can then use a software DVD player like Power DVD or WinDVD to play the files from your hard drive. You can always burn a DVD from the files on your hard drive.

  4. If we rip it to an AVI with DivX or XviD can we keep the dolby 5.1 sound ?

I know we can find on the net the subtitles in a srt-file, can we rip the different subtitles to a srt-file ? I'd like to keep different subtitles in a separate file. Sometimes i'd like to watch the movie with dutch or english or french subtitles (when available)
