This from one of the ads:A LEGAL Free-To-Air receiver that opens up ALL channels WIDE OPEN on Dish Network and other satellite systems that use EchoStar hardware. Finally, a complete solution that works without an access card.

Free satelite reception? Sounds a little too good to be true. There are a lot of sites out there selling it if you do a Google search.

I can't explain. Its an FTA receiver, there are a few channels out there that are "open air" alot of foriegn stuff, and a bunch of PBS stuff.

BUT even thought the reciever is legal whats being done with them is not. They are hacking them to get free Sat. TV. I know someone who did this, its a pain in the ass and constant uphill battle ot keep it up and running. Personally wouldn't be worth the time and effort to have you TV depending on software that constantly needs to be rewritten. My friend eventually got fed up and subscribed much as I kept suggesting to him.

PLEASE remember that methods to do this are not to be discussed on this forum, I don't wanna have to card anyone over it.

The reciever as it comes out of the box is for getting legal open air channels. So its 100% legal to sell... heck you could open a shop and sell the things (don't expect many customers thought) its only once hacked that they serve a more nefarious purpose

I guess all they care about the sellers fees

Good point, guess ebay just hasn't looked enough at the item description on the specific auction.

The FTA (Free To Air) receivers are not illegal in their own right, they are meant to let you watch the hundreds of free satellite channels that exist. The problem is they can be "flashed" - a file can be downloaded to them that allow the receiver to also get other channels that you should subscribe to or pay for . . .
It is just another piece of electronics that can be utilized in an illegal manner, much like a DVD burner can be used to copy copyrighted materials. Having the equipment is not illegal, using it in a way it was not intended to be used, may be. Before you flame me, we all know what happens out there by those lacking scruples, I am not condoning or condeming it, just commenting . . .
Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't after you . . .
