The burn just finished. And the result is.....

Windows recognizes the full capacity of the disc (7.4 Gb)...

Plays perfect on Power DVD...no stuttering, perfect sync...

Now to test on stand-alone. More in a minute.

Final result - plays just fine in my standalone. Success!! YATTA!!

    method to my madness:

Star Wars TXH laserdisc -> AVI -> 2-pass VBR in TMPGENC (encoded to 16x9 anamorphic NTSC) - > TMPGENC DVD Author w/ 384 kbps AC-3 -> Nero 6.601 -> JOY!

I bought my drive (HP 630) at Wal-mart for $90 and a 3 pak of DVD+R DL discs for 25, so they've gone mainstream. Been out for a while now, since late summer IIRC.

    You rock!

Since my Lite-On 411 was acting up, I thought I
thought I'd try the new NEC 3500.
Did my first burns tonight. Success!!
    Looks like a winner.
I think it was $67, and came with a version
    of NERO (for dual layer)..
    .........
My old version of NERO 5 did not recognize
the drive, so (of course)you will have to install the
    NEWER compatible software.
