I use CDex, which rips and encodes my CDs all in one step and stuff, but I believe that this uses a codec called LAME or something... I encode using super high quality VBR, though... which this software lets you control like TMPGEnc lets you control your video encodes. My mp3s sound awesome like 320Kbps ones would, but since they are VBR, they only use 320KBps when needed, and after that, they go to as low as 34kbps during silence. Good space saver for those whole want nothing but quality.

  4. LAME is the best for quality. And it's free.

TIbrO is right about VBR encoding - it's absolutely fabulous. LAME's settings are a little complicated, but if you bother to learn how to set it up it'll be worth it.

  7. Hi,

THE best MP3 encoder is LAME ! it's not as fast as most of the others, but that because LAME goes for quality, not speed.

  12. IMHO any product using the LAME encoding is the best

for ease of use I go with AudioCatalyst if your ripping a whole cd but if your just converting a single wav file (which I do a lot being a musician) I go with dbPowerAmp which you can find in the 'tools' section - great 'right click - convert to' shell! very nice!!

MusicMatch is good but I think they use their own mp3 algo - and side by side it loses to LAME
