  1. i have a question regarding dvd movies that are on dual layer discs, but main video and audio files fit onto a single layer. if i rip the entire dvd and use dvd2one to make it movie only, is it affecting the video quality, although it really doesn't need to? once again, this is in regard to movies who have a main video + audio size of less than 4.3GB, but have a total filesize with menu and extras of over 4.3GB.

Nope, it doesn't transcode/reencode the video then.

why would you use dvd2one if you want to keep the movie only, dvd2one takes time. use TitleSetBlanker instead to strip out all the extra and menu. this will only take a second compared to approx 30 mins using dvd2one.

this is assuming the movie only have one audio track or more than one audio track but still <4.3GB.

I personally only use DVD2One now for episode DVD's that I have created that DVD Shrink cannot fit onto one DVD, but for some reason DVD2One does manage it

Just my opinion, if the disk needs to be transcoded then the output is better with DVD Shrink with all quality optimising settings set and using 'Maximum Sharpness', but this is my personal preference

If you use DVD Shrink (as its free) and choose ReAuthor mode and the space bar shows less than 4464 (single DVD) then all it will do is copy and create the files needed for a main movie DVD

DVD2One operates in exactly the same way, but you don't get a progress bar to see if the main movie will fit on a single DVD without transcoding it

If you fancy a look at my guide on using purely freeware utilities to rip, transcode and burn a DVD (single or dual-layer) with a choice of full disc or main movie only (and subtitles if needed) have a look here

I use this method myself, so I know it works perfectly

  5. Hey steptoe, did you write that guide?

That is the first and only guide I use to backup my DVDs. Its simple and only uses free software. Great job.

I'm a newbie here and I'm only doing basic backups such as full movie or main movie only. And this works great
