  1. I'm looking to upgrade my sony dru510, and just noticed a Staples add for an I/O magic 16x DL internal DVDR for $79.94 after rebates. I've been happy with the sony, just would like something that could burn faster than 4x, AND get faster read speeds. CSS can be a bummer. Ideally I'd like to buy for under $100.00. Thanks for your help and or comments.

    Hi there,

    Have you checked here:
    https://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters

I currently have a Pioneer 108 that I think is great. My friends at work have the NEC 2500 and they have no problems either.

If you are ok buying mail order, then try here:
    www.newegg.com

They have a lot of Dual Layer burners in the $70 and up category. That way you don't have to play the rebate game. (Bought my burner from them on a Friday and it was here on the Monday)

  3. You can get the NEC 3500A for that much from Newegg. I paid $76 for it without software, if you want software it's $80.

  4. I've had a few Pioneer 107Ds and 108s, all of which are excellent (bought from newegg.com). Each of the 107Ds have burned litterally thousands of DVDs for me without a problem, and still going strong. The 108s are used to burn faster medias, and they are very good at that too. I'd recommend these.

My brother also has a couple of Nec 2300 I think, and they are still working for him, so you may try that as well.

    Hope it helps.

Plextor's new dvd burner the 716A will be released in a few weeks.

Plextor now supports bitsetting when using the latest version of Plextools and the latest version of NERO BURN 6.3.1.25. Take a look at the Plextor forum site at cdfreaks.com and at cdrlabs.com forum. Pioneer drives do not support bitsetting.

I have a similar choice problem.
My 8x single layer has just gone faulty, so im going to try and get a different model for a replacement.

Trouble is, my short list isn't very short! :
Pioneer Dvr-108 Double Layer Dual 16x Dvd R/rw
Aopen Chameleon 16x DVD R/RW Dual Layer Internal IDE
Plextor 12x DVD DUAL R/RW IDE BURNER
NEC ND-3500 Double Layer Dual 16x DVD R/RW
    LG GSA4120BL 12x DVD R/RW/Ram Dual Layer
    Samsung TS-H552B 16x Double Layer DVD R/RW
    Sony DWD22A 16x Dual Layer DVD R/RW

I guess based on previous postings and recommendations, I could lose the Aopen, LG and Samsung, but thats not really based on the product as such!

    Any recommendations definitely welcome!

The suggested retail price for the 16x Plextor burner is $149.00 which means it will probably cost between $125-$130.00. My personal preference is Plextor then Pioneer. The Pioneer drives do not support BITSETTING which Plextor now does. Plextor has PLEXTOOLS which can do PI/PO SCANS. In my opinion NEC drives are good with hacked firmwares so that cheap dvd media can be used to burn at faster speeds.

You are partially right on the bitsetting for the Pioneer. The Pioneer does not support bit setting on single layer dvd+R, however it does automatically set the dvd+R DL to dvd-rom. This is the default from Pioneer. According to Pioneer, this was done for the maximum compatability of the dl media. Why they didn't add it to the sl is beyond me, but I primarily burn -r media so the book type hasn't been an issue for me yet.

  12. Looks like strong support for the pioneer. Now comes the REALLY hard part......getting it without the wife finding out I bought more computer stuff . Thanks for all the suggestions and comments.

I had the LG and have the NEC, the NEC is better. It gives far more options for burning and reading, it's also significantly faster than the LG.

  14. why not buy the liteon 12x and use codeguys firmware to upgrade it to the 16x model (dual layer), although i think if u buy the 16x model, there isn't much price difference. Also i think you might be able to upgrade to the newer dual layer model (4x).

Liteon burners also support bitsetting and the best write strategies for dvds have been implemented through experimentaion, and so if u usecodeguys firmware, the quality of burning will be better, although i've heard NEC burners offer the best quality.
