  1. Hey

    Just picked up an 10" netbook with 2 gig of RAM for school..........I know! you can get a full sized laptop & a faster processor & a DVD burner with a 15" screen for about the same price, but i was wanting something that was small, I will only need the burner maybe once every 2 weeks, so I will take it with me on those days, now I have been checking out ebay & there are so many to choose from, but I have narrowed down my search to purchasing a named brand, samsung, NEC, LG, Liteon etc, no chinese brands from Hong Kong for me, 95% of ebay is littered with burners etc from Hong Kong, anyway, I don't need any extra features as in Litescribe etc, just a burner that burns most CD's & DVD's.
    I'd like to here your opinions & suggestions, & to anyone that has an external burner, are you happy with it?

    One other thing, I have read across the net, that many people have installed win7 on there net books, I have also read that Microsoft will be releasing an dedicated striped down version of win7 for net books once win7 is officialy released, anyway, if anyone has installed win7 on there netbooks, how is it coping & do you have any problems?

    External case with mains adapter + Lg burner here ... damn handy when servicing laptops with dodgy optical drives.

    Rate = 5 / 5 ... no problems

    As for the netbook ... they'd have to pay me to have one.

    Yeah, all I really want it for is, MS Word, Excel, PPP & Access, it runs them pretty good, & they are really small, otherwise I have to spend hours ridding the school machines of viruses/worms to do my work on them, we have a really slack TAFE collage here in Sydney.

  4. I have a Samsung SE-S084 slim external drive which is USB powered and seems quite adequate. I haven't used it very much, but it works well with a netbook and a few other systems that don't have built-in drives.

    USB powered would be the most compact. I have a Plextor PX608U - nice piece of hardware, but does have an external power supply. I bought one of those "netbook sleeves" to carry it in, so it won't reside in the larger netbook case (which barely carries the ASUS 1000HA and power supply). I'm still trying to solve where to carry a cordless mouse.

  6. The only thing I have noticed about the USB powered DVD/CD burners is, they lack a fair bit of writing speed, which is obviously due to the fact that they are operated via USB, but speed is not real important to me, reliability & portability is.
