The only two programs I've ever used to burn DVD's are DVD Decrypter (for ISO's), and the burning tool included with TMPGEnc DVD Author (for VIDEO_TS folders). I rarely use Decrypter since I rarely have ISO's to burn. However, I use the TDA burning tool very often, and I'd like to be able to set the burn speed to 4X.

It has a drop down menu for doing this, however, it's greyed out and set to "MAX", and I can't find any way to change it. I was wondering if anyone knows a way to actually use that drop down menu, or change the TDA burning tool's speed setting somewhere else, or even somehow set my burner to burn at a max speed of 4X for all burning programs.

My burner is a Lite-on 812, and it burns at a max speed of 8X for both -R and +R, but I've heard that in order to get less errors in your discs, staying at 4X or below is more reliable, and I really have no problem with waiting a little longer for a disc to burn.

Don't know if this will apply to your dvd burner, but I have a sony, and I recently downloaded a utility from Sony that let me control the burn speed. So if you can't find the feature in TDA, try looking for a utility from the burner vendor.

Thanks for the reply. I don't think Lite-on has such a utility, but there is probably third party software out there that'll do it. I was hoping someone would know a simple control panel setting or registry tweak that would limit the burn speed.

I did a bit of searching but couldn't find any 'INI' or config settings for this, nor could I find any Registry setting that controlled it.
I did find this in the documentation though ..
(Note) In this version the most appropriate speed will be selected automatically.
So it sounds like the intention in future versions is to allow you to change it, but not yet.

For what it's worth, I downloaded the sony utility to see if it would cure my problem (disks produced by the Sony were not playing well on my set-top; same disks, same data burned on my office TEAC burner played fine). No difference. So it was no use to me! Just took me longer to be disappointed, that's all!
