  1. Weird problem:
DVD-R's burned on an older Toshiba Sd-5002 burner. They play fine on my ancient Sony standalone (dvp-550) and are also fine on my PC. When I put them in my almost new (8 months) Panasonic 5 disc changer, they will not play. The display says "cannot play this type of disc".

Two types of media have this problem: white label Princos and Riteks.

Could my player's laser be dirty? DO those DVD cleaner discs really work?

this is most likly to be too general to help, but I have a panasonic s47 and f87 and they exhibit extraordinary compatability with buned dvd-r, +r ,-r/w and +r/w of many many brands, including quite a few different types of riteks. I don't think the panny's are especially picky.

granted I burn with a couple of different necs

  3. OK - another new twist:
I copied one of the DVD's that would not play using my new burner (Pioneer 8x burner - I forgot the model) and Memorex 4X media. Again - this copy of the copy works fine on the PC and my old picky Sony player, but refuses to play on the Panasonic.

One of the reasons I bought the Panasonic was the reports that it would play almost anything. My old Sony worked fine (and still does) for commercially produced movies, but was very picky on copies.

  4. DVD players can vary from one to the other even within the same model. Try taking the disc in to wherever you bought the player from and see if it plays in one like it, yours may just be out of specs. If it doesn't then just try the disc in different players till you find one you like that will play the disc.
