+R with bitsetting = best compatibility?

    Not always true.

Last weekend, I've tried to put a nice DVD+R with booktype set
at DVD-ROM in a relatively new player (one year old - samsung -don't know the model #).
It was not able to load the disk - grrr.
Let's try another and another and another disk.
    Same error message. Grrr again.

I've looked in the unit manual and it was written that this model was not able to play DVD-ROM.
So I've burned another DVD+R (same media, same file, same burner)
with the booktype set to DVD+R and bingo,
it was now able to load and play.

Weird. Just hope that this player is the only one!

    I doubt it.

Pressed DVD's have DVD-ROM booktype written on them.
In this case it would not play any original disc.

You could have some bad reflectivity DVD+R's or the burning speed was too high

I always burn at disk speed or lower.
Like I said, many disks burned with booktype at DVD-ROM from the same spindle
are simply not recognized by the player.
Same disk from the same spindle without the bitsetting can be read and played.

Here is a picture from the manual saying that it cannot read dvd-rom.
I've looked in other samsung manual and the same thing was written.

I was always under the impression that once a DVD was bitset to ROM....it didn't matter whether it was a + or - disc previously.
Does the player play a store bought DVD?

This player (samsung V3500) is a combo VHS/DVD.

It plays regular bought DVD movie as any other dvd player.

I think in this case the "ROM" means data discs that are read by a computer/certain dvd palyers that play an avi/xvid type movie.

My JVC says the same thing yet I play my bit set +R discs on ir flawlessly.

  7. Yeah I have tried my DVD-ROM booktype DVD's in many players without a problem. My guess is the booktype utility or your DVD writer is messed up..look for a updated firmware/utility.

    I doubt.
My home toshiba player will read dvd-rom booktype. It will not recognize non bit set dvd+r. This is normal for this player and I'm happy with this. I'm just surprised to see the opposite on another player.
I've verified my disk with dvdinfopro and not a doubt about this.
These were burned with Nu-ddw-082. Nu has their own bit setting utilities and this is what I use.
If I'm the only one who has noticed this, I would agree that something's wrong with me.

Anyone has tried to burn the same media without bitsetting after realizing that there is a compatibility problem?

  9. You are either using DVD+R's that have bad reflectivity or the fimware of that player gets confused if the booktype written in the Control Data Zone is different than the one prewritten in the ADIP.

RickTheRed, it's not just you or your burner. I don't have this same problem, but when I have to mass produce a bunch of DVD+R's with DVD-ROM bitsetting for the local theatrical groups I usually go to BestBuy with a couple of discs to test on various players.

All of the players usually recognize and play thouse DVD+R discs with DVD-ROM booktype. However, there's one Zenith DVD Recorder/VHS Recorder deck that simply refuses to play DVD+R's with DVD-ROM bitsetting. It simply ejects them. I tried a few different DVD+R disc brands/manufacturers and the same issue. However, when I put in a DVD+R disc with DVD+R booktype it recognizes it and plays just fine.

So, what I'm afraid of at the moment, as a DVD producer, is that some new players actually recognize the media type (profile), independent of the booktype, and expect the booktype to match the media. And if not, it will simply reject the disc. Sad, but seems to be true. On that Zenith it actually lights up in the front display window as DVD+R (the one with DVD-ROM booktype) and then immediately ejects.

Hopefully this media-type-conscious/screw-the-booktype trend of players won't live too long.

+R with bitsetting = best compatibility

It does not say 100% compatibility

    Edmund,

    Thanks,
I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one.
