Hey Guys, Hoping someone has some advice on this.

Recently all my Backups have been giving me problems.

Everyone ive done seems to stall at about half way through the disc, and then jump 30secs forward, sometimes even crashing the DVD Player.
This also happens on the PC so I know its not the DVD Player, and ive also tried 3 different types of discs and exactly the same.

It happens when i burn with Nero, CopytoDVD and Record Now DX, and even if i burn an iso with DVD Decrypter.

Its doing my head in as ive only noticed it yesterday, but my last 6 DVD's are like this, as i never checked them thoroughly enough.

The only things i can think of are the laser on the DVD Writer as it seems to half way everytime, but its only 3months old.
The other thing is nothing since ive upgraded to XP SP2 has worked, dont know how it could affect it, but its the only thing thats changed.

Anyone with any similar problems, Solutions?

Cheers, and sorry for the length of this post.

Could be bad media, as Capmaster suggested, or could be a bad burner.

I recently had issues with DVDs burned on my Sony burner. I suspected media, because it only happened with DVDs burned on TDK +R 4x, not on Memorex +RW's. However, I did a disk-to-disk copy at work, to the exact same media (same batch, even) and the copied DVD plays just fine.

I also took the Video_TS and Audio_TS folders in to work on a USB removable drive and burned them to the same media on my office burner, no problems.

A binary compare between the two disks succeeds of course. So in my case, my home Sony has an issue burning to DVD+R.

After much time wasted and coasters produced, my home sony burns great +RWs, 'disc error' +Rs, skipping -Rs. The +R disks play fine on my Apex player, but not on my Akai player, so whatever the problem is it's very subtle but I've now adopted a strategy of burning to +RW at home for testing, then disk-copying to +R at work - until I can buy a new burner.

LOL, I have over 50 DVD's that work perfect on the same media Intenso DVD-R's and some others on Mirror discs and some Brown Datawrites they all play perfect especialy the Intenso's.

Im fearing it might be a bad burner, but its not old and was working fine up until I changed the OS

I haven't changed the Media I use, the firmware is up to date and im sure the ASPI layer is fine, and i feel like crying cause my last 6 backups i hve to do all over again, as well as wasting 15 DVD-R's trying every type of Software and Burning method.

  4. You have to match you media to your dvd writer, what dvd writer are you using?

If its a panasonic, try some panasonic media.

The media you mentioned all looks pretty cheap.

That's going to the other extreme. Just buy a brand that widely available such as Maxell, Fuji, Sony, TDK. I usually buy whatever's on sale.

Its a Pikaone drive, think its based on a BTC Drive though.

Im thinking of buying some expensive discs to try, but ive never had problems with the present media till recently.

The Datawrite are Fuji discs anyway, well thats what DVD Info says.

I can live with wasting 25p discs but, but expensive ones will piss me off.

The only thing ive changed recently is the OS and the firmware on the drive.

You could go broke buying Panasonic media. Good as a last resort, but there will be good media cheaper than Panasonic ....or Pioneer (if there's still any stocked) or Apple.

Do you have access to another burner? We bought a bunch of Dell PCs recently at work and they all shipped with DVD burners. To my surprise, they are producing better output than my home Sony. My latest laptop also shipped with a dvd burner ... so suddenly, I have access to a variety of burners - helps with troubleshooting! Good Luck figuring this out!

Nope unfortunately, would be nice though.
Thats the only thing i havent got 2 of, I have spare ram, processors and DVD-Roms and CD-RW lying around but no DVD-Writer.

Ive aquired a variety of different media to test, even DVD+r's which ive yet to use on the writer, so ill be spending my day trying everything i can think of, as i recently broke my knee so i have all day to mess about with it

  10. I don't think it's the OS, or bad media. It has to be the drive. You've stated:
The only thing ive changed recently is the OS and the firmware on the drive.

Why did you change the firmware? Can you change it back? I would try that first. Then I would go into the system bios and reset system configuration, (or something along those lines). Clear NVRAM is another that means the same thing. This will refresh the hardware settings, such as changing the firmware.

Give that a shot. Hope it helps.

Cheers Srembecki, i will give that a try, as far as i know I cant revert back to the previous firmware, but i will try.

I originally updated it as the drive wouldn't write to DVD+RW, and the new firmware helped, I needed the RW as i was backing up before a Format and Re-Install, and since then ive had problems.
