I know the heydays of webdesign are long gone but I think there is still work in this business, especially that I see a trend towards redesigning lots of websights using flash instead of straight html and to improve the navigation of websites.

Do you remember how pathetic some of the first websites were - you couldn't tell where the hell to even click. Now they say if web surfers done have a clear crisp navigation, they are gone.

I am looking for a general idea of what an hourly charge rate would be these days for this type of work.

At least $40 per hour (U.S.) on the cheap side.

Usually site packages for a single developer can go $300-$600 for the first page, $100 per after. Flash can get you $200-up per object.

It also depends on how competitive you want to be. For school business (on the side), I charge 10-20% of the above rates. Different rates for the official stuff.

Supreme, you are doing web work for a living right now?

How is this business these days - still some money to be made?
How do you advertise and get the word out?

    Any other tips are appreciated.
    thx.

I do most of it on the side because I still have a few long-term contracts going.

My "job" is for a school, but I get a bite here and there. Most of my business comes from networking and word-of-mouth. If you have kids in school, it's a great way to meet potential clients. Sometimes you can browse and email the owners of sites that are "somewhat lacking"
