  1. Hey there everyone. I got a quick question about memory. I am building a system for my sister and I am going to go with the AMD 64 platform. Well I figured I wanted to go with a Socket 754 or 939. Preferrably the 754 because of the cheaper cpu's.

Anyways, I have 1gb of OCZ Registered ECC Ram laying around from the system my brother built. It didn't work with his Asus KS8V and the 3400+. Only 512 would work....not the full gig. It would only boot up with the 512. I am assuming its because that mobo is reccommended for non-ecc unbuffered ram.

Is it possible to get the full gig of Registered PC3200 to work with a 754 board? We didn't have luck with my brothers but is that just an Asus board being picky? Just wondering if we can use the ram laying around in the new system.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Do you mean the A8V? That is Asus's 939 board, and yes it requires non-ecc unbuffered.

If you meant the SK8V that is the 940 socket and it does support registered ECC memory. I've got this board with a gig of such memory. Great board.

As for the 754 boards it looks like they all require un-buffered. You can look at all of Asus's boards here. http://www.asus.com/products/mb/mbindex.htm

Click on one and go to specifications and it tells you whether it supports ECC/Non-ECC or registered/un-buffered.

Sorry about that....added an S into the model...heheh.

I guess from the sounds of it I need to sell that ram I have laying around or something.....I mean its brand new, never been used except for that first day in my bros system.

I would really like to go with a 754 system and I guess she will have to buy some unbuffered RAM.

    Thanks for your help adam.

ECC reg stuff is mostly for servers. That stuff is slower than unbuffered RAM anyway. I wish it weren't required on my old workstation since even good PC2100 ECC reg is still pretty expensive stuff. You should be able to fetch a good price for that memory. Are they two identical sticks of 512MB? They'll go pretty quick over at 2CPU.com
