  1. Hi,

I have problem with either DVDs that I authored or with backups of the DVDs that I bought. I have Pioneer DV-414 player, around 5 years old. Looking at different forums, it looks like that this player is compatible with most recordable media (DVD-R, DVD-RW) and users do not have problems. However, I do. My problem is the following; on either backup movies or on my own movies that are longer than ~60 minutes, playback is feezing right around that time. Playback before that was smooth and without any problems. If I try to advance to the next chapter after it freezes, it does not do it. There are not problems with DVDs that I bought, just backups and home authored movies. The same DVDs play without problems on my PC with WinDVD player. I have the following at home regarding DVD stuff:

DVD writer: LG-4020B (slow but it works)
    OS used: Win XP
SW for burning: tried Nero as well as Burnatonce, same issue
Recorable media: DVD-R and DVD-RW from Maxwell, TDK, Memorex, No-name
    Backup SW - DVD Shrink
Authoring SW: Several, with same results

Any clue what is going on? Is it a burner? Is it a DVD player?

    Thanks.

Personally I don't use any of the mentioned media, and the No-name really sticks out as possibly the cause of your troubles. Actually I'll confess, I have used TDK, but only as scratch disks until better media came via mailorder.

Could be time to get a new burner, I once had a laser go on me in a CD burner. Burns got worse as time went on, and were really bad near the outside edge of the disks. It's whizzing by the laser faster and may not be able to write the information quick enough.

And, I could be totally wrong in which case I'm sure someone else will come along as offer their opinion as well.

  3. Thanks. So, if you do not use any media that is mentioned, which once do you use? I only used no-name once and mentioned it just for comparison with other brand names. No difference regarding the problem that I have.

  4. As I mentioned, I did use a couple of TDK disks when I was learning, and I didn't put anything I wanted to keep on them. I don't recall having any trouble though...

Right now I'm using Ritek, just seems to be very compatible with everything I'm using, Pioneer A06 burner, Toshiba SD2200 DVD player, and a few others. None of my friend have had issues with the Riteks either, so that's what we're using.

I found this information in the List section to the left. Look up your burner, and your player and match up the info to find a good match. You'll probably find Riteks to be a good match as well, but there are better brands available.

  5. Hi,

I got a new burner (Pioneer DVR-107D) and nothing changed. DVD's that I burn are still freezing sooner or later. It starts with squares showing up randomly on the screen and after several seconds, it freezes. So, it is not a burner or a media. It might be a player itself. However, I do not have a clues on what makes player to play original DVD's without freezing or skipping but has problems with "home made" DVD's. Would cleaning the player help? Should I spend any money on a special "cleaning DVD" or not?

    Thanks

  6. Hello Alek,
Have you tried playing your DVDs on players other than your Pioneer DV-414? And I hope you aren't labeling your discs.

what you need to do is buy a new dvd player. the exact same same thing happend to me and a lot of my friends with player that were about 3 or more years old. they WILL play recordable media but are very sensitive to slight marks or slightly bad recordings and playback jerky. get even the cheapest new player for $50 australian and it will play the exact same disc's perfectly i guarantee it.

Just wondering what is wrong with labeling DVD's?

  9. Applying DVD label stickers onto your discs will throw off the balance of the disc and cause readability/lastability issues.
DVD sticker labels are NOT recommended at all.

I don't think this issue is settled at all. Many people have no trouble with labled disks. Still if you are labeling them it would be the easiest thing in the world to stop labeling them and see if your problem instantly vanishes (I doubt it).

I had the same problem you have. When I bought a new DVD player the problem pretty much stopped (but not completely). I found of my two DVD burners one of them still would cause this problem even on the new player so I stopped using that DVD burner and have not had the problem since. So in my case I think I had two sources of my problem which, unlikely as it sounds, gave the same symptom.

No one here can tell you what is causing your problem with certainty. You have to eliminate the possibilities one by one. (Try another player, stop labeling, etc)

What is not settled about it?
It has been shown numerous times that discs that have self-applied labels will scan with higher PI/PIF errors, can cause readability problems in some players and can sustain damage over time due to the label.
Yes *some* people have no trouble with these type of labels, but it is best to avoid the trouble that may be caused.

It's not a settled issue. First, no one has proved / disproved that it's a balance issue. Many of us burn disks with globs of glue on the edges (Ridata G04 from Amazon) with no problems. Surely, that would be a balance problem, but the disks are fine. Secondly, inks on the labels are dry, don't seep into anything and water-based inks sure as hell will not penetrate a laqueur coating.

There is a thread under Media that indicates it's a problem with the label adhesive....shrinking and expanding due to heat, causing a slight warping of the disks...resulting in pixelization and blocking on the player...but again, only for some people. I've labeled 300+ DVDs without a single issue.

I used to have the same problem. The discs that I was using were ritek go4's. I've started using verbatim discs now. Burnt around 200 discs with only one coaster.

  14. The same thing happens to me now......try using dvd+r and if your burner supports it, biset it to dvd-rom.... It worked for me when i decided to use of my dvd+r that came with my liteon burner....but i'm still using dvd-r and the movie skips every like 15 min., cos i got like a 50 batch so i have to use it all.
