VCD made in China is B/W here in USA

Hi,

My inlaws went to China and hired someone to video tape them while they were on tour with family. They had a VCD made of the tape that worked just fine in China. But when they got back and popped into their DVD, it came up in black and white. All the color was lost. It does work OK on my computer though.

I know almost nothing about VCD/DVD stuff, but I suspect it has something to do with the region code. I looked through the FAQs with very little success.

Is there a (hopefully free and easy) way to fix this?

Any pointers will be gratefully accepted.

If you still have the tape you should do it again in NTSC instead of PAL.

yeah,its been made with the PAL60hz settings.
just reconvert it on the pc to ntsc,it should be fine.

I have been going to China at least once a year for the last 3 years. I never have that problem.

Unfortunately, I never had the tape. This was a (semi-)professional outfit that made the VCD back in China.

Any pointers on how I might go about converting it to NTSC? I'm fairly adept at figuring out new SW, but there seems to be so much to choose from that I'm not sure quite where to start.

I'm not a video enthusiast, I'm just trying to score some points with my mother-in-law. :-)

Just a buy a dvd player able to do real-time PAL->NTSC conversion.

Convert vcd .dat to .mpeg using vcdgear.
load up mpeg in Tmpgenc.
Project wizard > vcd (ntsc) template
re-encode > burn to vcd with nero or vcdeasy.
