IF you look up my ID and find a thread earlier this summer, you will see where i posted about my burning speed being stuck at 2.5x when burning DVD's now (just burning from an image).. my old problem was fixed cuz i think it was the fact that i was using shitty blank DVD's.. well i recently updated my PC with Service Pack 2 for XP Pro.. today i went to burn it was burning slow as hell.. i looked at and say it was at 2.5x... pissed me off. so i looked around couldnt see a problem anywhere.. so i for the firmware update for it.. rebooted and i burned at 4x..i was happy. problem solved.. but once the next DVD started burning.. back to teh same problem again.. any ideas for me? seems odd. i got two choices for speed. MAXIMUM and 2x.. both which are really 2x............any help would be greatly appreciated..

    thanks,

you might check the following if yours is a IDE drive:
start -> control panel -> system properties -> hardware ->
device manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI controlers (expand to show channels) -> sec IDE channel -> (right click on properties) -> advanced settings.

Transmit Mode should show "DMA if Available" *
and curent transfer mode = "Ultra DMA Mode2"

    * if it is "PIO only", and DMA is available this is most likely your problem.change it and reboot.

just had this problem with a new Plextor PX-712A
installed it and before even burning a disk i updated the firmware.i knew that channel was Ultra DMA, but what i didn't know was the updater changed it to PIO only and never back as it should have.

have not seen anyone happy with SP2, i'll wait at least a year!

    good luck
